no, just the one bathroom with shower, we have another half bathroom but there is no tile in there.
Would it be better to have a mold company remove the mold, and then have a contractor come in, or just do it all at once?

I think FurnaceFace is going through this right now and he mentioned the contractor suggested he do the tear-out as contractors have to follow strict guidelines for mold removal (leading to a heck of alot more cost.) Depends on your risk tolerance...if it seems relatively contained to the shower/tub enclosure, tear the whole dang thing out yourself and then have a contractor come in for the reno. If it looks to be moving beyond that space, you'll want to go with pro's all the way (the last thing you want is mold coming back in your new bathroom!)
Almost forgot...I had localized mold due to crappy construction on the foot of a shower enclosure. I did the tear-out and had a pro come in and retile. No problems. I didn't know then what I've learned now though. I just got lucky.

You can do it. here's what you need
+
then hang up vapor barrier
and seal seams with duct tape.
That'll hold until you figure out what to do next.

Sucks. We are currently remodelling our bathroom - found wet mushy drywall in behind the shower insert and water damage through to the floor joists from the bathub and toilet. Luckily we didn't have mold but we probably caught it just early enough.
Remodelling the bathroom was more expensive than I thought it would be (sorry if that's not exactly what you want to hear). I'd recommend at least getting a quote from "The Suite Life" to do the re-model part, if you're going that route.

Majestic Tile will do top of the line job, you pay for their workmanship, but as I said, it is top of the line. We used them for all the tile work we had done when we renovated 2 years ago. He can do it all and he prefers to do all the prep work too. If he does not know how it was prepped, he won't give his guarantee.
If you do call them, Dale is the owner, I would talk to him.

no matter what you do with your bathroom, do it yourself or have someone do it, make sure that you/they use blue board behind the tile. It resists mold, doesn't absorb water, and is made for showers / tubs. and like previous posts, clean everything from floor up and steam the area with a steamer. let it air out.
if you've got kids, get it done professionally.

Actually, "Blue Board" is good for bathroom walls like everywhere BUT! your tub/shower. Never use any type of gypsum in a "wet" location.
Cement board only.

This is 100% correct. We have cement board in all our showers, up to the ceiling and on the ceiling too I believe. Don't go cheap and think I will use cement board on the bottom and blue board on top. Just do it right.

Your bathroom work should qualify for the reno rebate the Federal Govt is offering right now, I think it ends sometime in 2010? Keep all receipts just to be on the safe side. I think if you do some work yourself, you can count your labor, but don't quote me on that.

So to bring up an old thread, we're having trouble with the contractors we've talked to, 2 have been late for appointments, 1 completely forgot, another told me they would call in the afternoon and 2 days later finally did call and gave me the my battery died excuse... one guy we're ready to commit to can't seem to get his things together and put together a formal quote for us, and has told us three times a quote would be in today, and it's still not here. [/rant]
is this normal or is this just a run of bad contractors.

Probably just bad contractors. The good ones I have used are generally always on time and if not will make sure to let me know.

Before I say this, realize I have no real knowledge in this area. This is second hand info I heard from a health inspector friend of mine. He says there is mold everywhere. Everyone has it. You only need to be worried about certain kinds. I don't know what kinds they are, but I'd see if you can get your place inspected at least first, before going crazy with massive repairs and renovations. Just a thought.

I don't think I'd hire any of those contractors you've talked to so far, for a bathroom reno. They may be late etc finishing it, and have excuses. Keep calling until you find one you can trust. You don't want to be stranded with half the bathroom done. Just ask my wife.

Schluter is good stuff. Lots of good stuff for tiles and their shower kits are good as well.
