I'd say that long term 2 way contracts with high annual values are far more problematic than any 1 year deal. These long term over payments are when we end up with 62 guys in the AHL because no one wants their CPHL salary.

I needed a guy who could help with the offense. And whats wrong with having a guy like that in the AHL? If he sucks next season, you bury him in the A or buy him out down there. It's not like people are giving these types of players up for nothing(I've tried) so I overpaid a bit for a 1st-2nd line guy that I needed to get better.

Lousy weak excuse for a guy who hacked on the Foote signing.

Hey all I said was I was surprised he got that much, not really hacking on him. If he has good stats, then go for it, I just think of him as the 38 year old playing for the Av's and can't believe someone would pay him that much

its a 1 year deal in the UFA, what else would you expect, at least he has a team in the nhl, bert hasn't even found one.

And that's fine as well...if Bert doesn't find a team, then his 3 year deal turns into a 1 year CPHL deal and 2 years in the A

Always a possibility with most of the UFA's. I'd be surprised if he did after his season in Calgary, but who knows

The fact is the Blues had $14mm to spend and they might as well guarantee they get the guy. I don't know if I would have done a 3-year deal but it's not the worst thing in the world, especially with a 2-way contract.
In some aspects, it's nice to have call-ups like that on the farm because nobody will be willing to claim them when you send them back down to the AHL.

Signing Niittymaki the way we did was definitely better than giving 5 million each year on a one way. We're protected in case he gets injured, and we're in a decent position if Mike Smith has more problems with concussions.
Unfortunately we couldn't get Malhotra and Belanger. They received the largest offers among the 4 forwards we tried for. Malhotra was paid too much by the Islanders, checkers aren't worth more than 4 million dollars. Good luck getting a lot for him in a trade.

It also didn't make much sense to only sign them for one year, because if they have a good season and get a ratings uptick, then the "matrix" contract is even higher next time. If their ratings go down, you can waive to the AHL and discard them via buyout in the summer as long as they're on a 2 way deal.

One year deals are important if you're gonna trade em. He can even out the cap when you make a deal. Come trade deadline, there will be at least one team that will give a 2nd rounder or a mid level prospect for someone like Malhotra who'll help the team for the playoffs and than can be thrown away. End result, team like Isles getting a free asset, assisting them with their re-build.

For these guys to get a higher re-rate, they would have to have career years, so thats nearly impossible but if they do, sign em and keep em.

My sentiments exactly, I am not going to overpay (higher than grid) on a multi-year deal, unless I know that a player is likely to get better. Most players by these ages have reached their peak or are pretty close. Just lowers my risk in this offseason of taking risks already. At first I wasn't to keen on this guy as I talked about with Matt, but then I saw his DF and FO ratings which are among the very best in the league. Thanks

Seriously how many forwards over the age of 29 are in for a ratings increase. I'm sorry but 90% of the time the players rating only has one place to go at that age.
For bad teams to get better, they need to use whatever resources they have to get players and make sure they use that player to build their organization. Better to overpay and get a guy for one year than throw out a market value 3 year deal and hope you get the player so you can keep him for 3 years and hope he bucks the trend and goes way up for ratings.

Senators happy to get Foote.1 year deal for an defensive upgrade we felt we needed.

Get leadership as well.. We had enough cap to try and swing a deal.
This along with Recchi should help us win more games this year which was the goal for us.

complimentary players for our core that don't tie us up long term.
