Put me in the "suck it up" camp. Yes, it sucks that you were woken up early. But consider the fact that at some point you may need to make noise for a construction project. It's not like the guy is running some business out of his garage and is going to be making noise from now on at 7:00am. It's one or two days.

Maybe he could have come by to tell you; but maybe with a major renovation going on he had other things on his "to do" list.

I rented in a house that they were adding a floor to, while I was living in it. The scale of the excavation was masssive, as they needed to add new supports to the house. I believe they also took the opportunity to dig the basement 2 feet deeper to make increaese the headroom and make it a true rental suite.

After several weeks we got used to the noise and vibrations of jackhammering. One morning we were instead awakened by a suffocating cloud of concrete filling the house. This was a Saturday.

Not to mention they left the back half of the house closed by a tarp. Which gave every rodent in the neighbourhood open access to our kitchen... good times good times.

Yeah, I was going to mention that if they're doing some serious reno's/construction, this is probably just the beginning of your noise issue. Sucks, but not a lot you can really do about it other than suck it up until they finish the work.

That's (one of the reasons) why we decided to move when our neighbour told us he was planning to tear down and rebuild!!

If I hired a guy to do work like that and they showed up guns a blazing at 7am I'd be thrilled. The sooner they are there the sooner they are done. I'm paying good money and want it done right and quick. I bet anything you'd be the same if you hired them as well.

I think it's because that's their job and they want to get it done. That goes the same for anyone else. It's just that pen to paper doesn't make much noise. What if they asked accountants to wait until noon, or asked a lawyer to wait until 10am to start their work. Is that any more fair? You'll say, "That's crazy, there's no reason to ask them to wait, what they do doesn't affect anyone?" And that's how they chose 7am as the time for construction workers to do their job. A "reasonable" time to start work that is fair and won't affect people horribly (accept you apparently).

BUT, it does suck, and I agree, don't get me wrong. I had a guy sawing concrete across my back alley for a week straight, creating a huge noise and not to mention a giant grey cloud of concrete dust, which I'm pretty sure his neighbours didn't appreciate much.

They did let you sleep until a reasonable time. The bylaw says that time is 7 am.

I won't be singing a different tune. I work in the construction industry. If work had to be done at times when it would please absolutely everyone, work would never get done. Some stages of construction are dirty, dusty, and loud. Just be glad that not all stages are.

For everyone's information:
Contractors can actually get extensions to the noise bylaw if they can show that the work being done must be done outside of the noise bylaw period. For example, we were pouring a the concrete deck of a parkade, and it all has to be poured in one pour. It takes longer then 7 am to 10 pm to do all the placing, finishing and power trowelling, so we got a noise bylaw exemption for the power trowels.

Construction equipment is also exempt from the regular during-the-day decibel levels of the noise bylaw.

No, what I didn't say making noise makes them self righteous, I know from working with them that they can be.

Anyways, clearly I was irritated that I got woken up early and just wanted to rant. I guess I'm the one being unreasonable here, thinking I should be able to sleep until I have to wake up for work.

But it's the law, so that's within their right.

I think the time isn't a problem, but maybe the neighbor should have clued you in first.
