Default XBOX 360 Question

So my XBOX has crapped out, and it's not the red light of death. I have the original XBOX 360 (bought the day they came out) so i'm amazed it's lasted this long.

Basically, you start to play a game and in a couple of minutes the game and it freezes (no red ring, screen just freezes and the light remains green). It never freezes, however, in XBOX Dashboard. Anyone else have this problem? Is my XBOX done, or can I have it repaired (if so, where?)? Given it's 4 years old now, should i just buy a new one?

Any imput would help.

Thanks

That happened to my xbox a while ago. Its a known problem with the 360s. I think it was either the dvd drive or motherboard, can't remember which. I was within the warranty period and had it replaced through Microsoft. It might be worth calling them and see what they say, although I think you're outside of the warranty period, they might be able to fix it for less than it would cost to buy a new one. The repaired xbox would come with full warranty I believe.

That happened to my XBOX awhile ago (not the 360, the old original XBOX but the exact same symptoms). It was the DVD drive, and I bought a replacement off of ebay for $20 or something, fixed it right up.

My 360 hasn't done anything wacky like that, but I'd be tempted to see if I could source a replacement DVD drive for it cheap.

Problem with replacing a dvd drive in the 360 is you need to dump the key from the rom. If you arn't overly technical, this could be a big pain in the ass.

Thanks for the help guys. I simply went to EB games and bought a refurbished XBOX 360 ($130+$20 for a 1 year EB games warranty), and attached my hard drive to it. Works like a charm!

the upside here is that if you can keep it working on the dashboard you can continue to use it as a media player over a network.
