I worked with the gentleman who was killed last night as well. It's very sad, he was such a happy guy... Always smiling.
RIP

I agree.
Drinking and driving should be a zero tolerance offense. You get caught under the influence, license gone.

I don't think "they" want to end drinking and driving.........because an entire economic infrastructure depends on it. It generates money. They like their repeat offenders. What would lawyers, cops, judges etc. do all day if there were no drinking and driving??
If say, new vehicles were equipped with those breath sensor devices, drinking and driving would be phased out as the years go on.....

Yeah it should be manslaughter.
Can't really charge anyone with murder without intent.
There's been alot accidents lately cause people in general drive way too fast and in the summer they're drinking and on the driving around more.

There was some ad (or promotion or something) that ran back in England a while ago that said the only safe level of alcohol for driving is zero alcohol. I second that.

You need to lay off the infowars man, that is completely ridiculous. Do you honestly think that lawyers, cops and judges want people to continue dying as a means of preserving the legal "industry". Geez.

Unfortunately, I don't believe that is a viable option. Alcohol is such a part of our culture now that it is not realistic to have a "zero alcohol" policy. I think the 0.08 reading is a fine standard, although I would not know what that actually feels like.
I speculate that the drunks who run red lights and kill families on our highways must be absolutely bombed while doing so.

I saw a video, can't remember where, and they showed people driving after 1,2,3 drinks, never reaching the legal limit. Sober they were weaving in between pylons no problem, but even after one drink people started hitting cones.
People need to also realize that speed excessively (i dont' want to start this debate again, because I speed too sometimes) are just as stupid as those who drink and drive, same with those who drive exhausted, in fact many accidents occur because those driving are "too tired".

Blow me. Just because I referenced infowars in another un-related thread does not mean I use it everywhere, so quit assuming.
I did not get these ideas from infowars........so lay off. I believe everything boils down to money.

Perhaps on your first conviction, provided its a simple impaired conviction with no injuries and no accident you get a long suspension. Any subsequent convictions or any injuries/accident/death related to your first conviction and it's bye bye driving privileges.
|
I agree. But, if you are charged with a DUI, and if you kill somebody, you should be charged with 2nd degree murder... even if its your first DUI.

Some people can handle 1,2 or 3 drinks and not be affected in the same way. It is different for folks of different size, gender etc.
That is why I am curious as to what 0.08 feels like for me.

Also cell phones and texting while driving.

But a cab ride home would have been like $20. Do you realize how many more beers that is?
I don't get drunk driving or what the people are thinking that do it. What are you saving yourself to possibly kill yourself and more importantly others around you.
I have always been in the mind set where if I knew I could drive home drunk and know I'm only going to have the possibility to kill myself I would probably risk it some nights. But the fact you are putting other people in danger is just stupid.
I don't necessarily believe it should be a one and done system since we all make mistakes and get second chances. However I would like stricter penalties for such thing leading to no license the rest of your life. I know too many people that drive drunk because it will "just be a 24hr".
1st time: 30 day suspension
2nd time: 1 year suspension
3rd time: 1 year in jail and life time suspension
If the driver is caught driving without a license then typical punishment would happen but if they were driving drunk without a license than it's an automatic 1 year in jail and life time suspension unless you are already on your 3rd strike which you would get 5-10 years in jail.
You do NOT have the right to put my life, my little brothers lives, my family and friends lives in danger just because you can't afford a $20 cab ride, or whatever excuses you want to make up to help yourself make it home on that drive.

I actually was at Mcdonalds while this accident was being sorted out. I saw the truck flipped on it's side and I said to my buddy that someone probably got killed from the accident.
I was going to take a picture of the truck flipped on it's side but i didn't really want to get out of my car.
the guy who ran away was pretty lucky that he didn't die as well.

Well I think when most people are sober, they logically think to themselves that they should not and would not drink and drive. However, when intoxicated, that same person can suddenly justify or convince themselves that they can drive home and get there safely. THAT is the problem.

I would have thought that the truck would have hit the driver's side. My friend said the passenger was alright and left the hospital last nite.

Look Gozer (and the rest of you), I thought it was obvious that I was being cynical. I believe that we as a society are not making a near good enough effort to rid us of drinking and driving. That is all.
Fining people, putting them in jail for a few months, suspending their lisense etc. are not solutions to the problem of drinking and driving. Nobody else sees that?
