Default Republicans for Ignatieff???

http://www.republicansforignatieff.com/

Quote:
Republicans for Ignatieff is a new international online community for Republican supporters of Michael Ignatieff. We are grassroots individuals, both registered Republicans and Republican supporters, who back Michael Ignatieff's quest to become Prime Minister of Canada.
Quote:
But Conservative party executive director Dan Hilton said “Republicans for Ignatieff is not a website of the Conservative Party of Canada.”

“It was not us,” said NDP spokesman Rick Boychuk. “I want to be really clear about that.”
If not them, then who?

Or maybe dissenting Liberals? Ignatieff has shown an old school Liberal view on foreign affairs in the past, there are a lot of Liberals who want to maintain a conservative view on Foreign policy within the LPC.

After reading books like 'While Canada Slept' by Andrew Cohen and 'The Truth About Canada' I am ready for a PM that can echo Pearson's view of Canada on the world stage... strangely enough that has some within his own party uncomfortable.

Quickly looking at their site, it is obviously made by far left persons because they refer to Alberta's oil sands as the tar sands. Ignatieff recognizes that the oil sands are important, I guess that is also something that the idiots on the far left cannot comprehend.

Uh-huh.

"Although the current Canadian Prime Minister is a conservative, he has challenged the United States on the Arctic, he is charting Canada's own course in the Americas, and he has failed to demonstrate a deep emotional connection to America like Michael Ignatieff."

I'm not sure the Bloc or NDP would put up a web site so complimentary to the current Prime Minister, suggesting he has more of a backbone for standing up for Canada.

True... maybe it is a conservative conspiracy to try and further split the left vote.

See that's the thing. Seems to me the right would stand to gain more from painting Iggy as an extremist.

For years, lefties have been painting Harper and his team as "in bed with bush", neocons, Nazi's etc.

This is quite laughable as Harper, based solely on his actions in gov't, is no more right wing than say, Paul Martin.

Now consider comments made by both Harper and Iggy while not in gov't. Even if you consider the firewall letter and Harper's support for the Iraqi war, reading a website such as the above makes one realize that Iggy in power might act way more "republican" than Harper.
I think this is what the makers of the site are trying to portray.

It's not the NDP (see initial post). I'm no forensic linguist, but whoever wrote the site seems to have too good of a command of the English language to be Bloc

I do not see how that would work though, with Ignatieff constantly making stands on the left on social issues, and with the conservatives trying to brand him as a tax and spend liberal. Although, mudslinging does not really have to make sense in order to work.

In order for the Tories to 'officially' appeal to their conservative base, they are better off painting Iggy as a Liberal, because I would imagine a majority of Tory supporters actually agree with Iggy's controversial comments.

My guess is a right wing blogger felt that if liberals could be scared away by bringing up Harper's past, it could work just as easily by doing the same to Iggy.

Pretty clear that it's a conservative (small c not big C) ploy to paint the leader of the Liberals as too right-wing and America-centric to be acceptable to centrist voters. By painting a picture of him being to the right of Harper on National Security, and possibly Energy as well 'too American' they are trying to convince the 'patriotic left' that Ignatieff is a worse chioce for them than the status quo with Harper. It fits directly with the electioneering attack adds the Conservative Party has been airing even though there is no election in the offing.

God forbid if we had an academic running the country.

So is it a spoof, or does he really feel that way?

Debatable. I was referring to Ignatieff though. I really think in a general election he tones down some of his prior views on international security. Which is really too bad. Because from what I've read, he really sounds like an academic that had a grasp on the 'real world' and isn't extolling the virtues of liberal institutionalism.

How is it debateable? Harper is an economist....you might not be able to tell given the past year, but that's what the piece of paper would say!

If Harper is an academic, then the bar is pretty low. He is constantly at odds with most of the world's economists. He keeps saying we will be fine without cutting government programs or raising taxes and that after 5 years we will be back in surplus, while most economists say he is wrong and that strategy will lead to unsustainable levels of debt extending almost to the end of the 2010s.

Ignatieff, on the other hand, has had important positions in Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge, and the University of Toronto... he has travelled the world as a journalist, going to the most war torn countries, I think I remember reading something about him even having the ear of the UN secretary general on a flight to Rwanda during the genocide. He was recognized as one of the world's leading public intellectuals not too long ago.

Strange they would even bother with this website.

Most likely a 3rd party that supports the Cons in Canada. Likely some old geezer snow bird. Site is hosted in Florida. Probably got his pimple faced nefew to do the site for him.

Trained as sure. But I see him more a purely political animal. One that could probably destroy Ignatieff in the Commons.

I'm interested in seeing an electorial debate between Ignatieff and Harper. I think it would be an outright brawl.
