Well I guess it's my turn to take a hard line stance and make fun of something that probably a lot of people enjoy.

Themed parties (except Halloween) are outrageously lame, why do it? It doesn't make sense, how does it add anything to a party?

Did you get treat bags at the end? If you are over the age of 10 and are going to a party you don't need to be dressed up for any reason.

If people want to get dressed up and have a good time, who are you to say they are wrong? Who are you to decide they are lame?

Costume parties have been happening since the 1800s. It's fun, it gives people an excuse to put some work into what they show up as or dress up in fantasy and enjoy themselves. It's an excuse to play music and have entertainment that normally wouldn't be there.

I'd rather go to an 80s party with people dressed up in fun clothes and laughing at each other and having a blast with music you don't normally hear at parties than a regular party of people all looking the same standing around in their popped collars and diesel jeans with the playlist from AMP/VIBE/Energy or some Alt Rock playing ad nauseum.

They are hilarious man, not knowing what people will be wearing, seeing the cheesy mullets etc... awesome.

A friend of mind threw a hooker and ho party a couple of years ago and it definately was a lot of fun.

For my 30th birthday my friends threw me a funeral where I had to lay in a coffin while they eulogized me and fed me drinks and as sad as it sounds it was a ton of fun.

I don't really like the standard fare kitchen parties that people throw now days where they blast the same crappy three beat disco type whats hot today music while all the people dress the same.

Aren't all parties/club outings (most?) costume parties anyway? People get themselves dressed and presented differently than they normally do ... unless there's clowns who go to work dressed like they go to the bar ...

Why you gotta hate on treat bags?

I think the appeal is getting the costumes and the hilarity that ensues once everyone shows up wearing hideous outfits. As a once in awhile thing I think it adds some extra laughs, or maybe I just like making food and drinks to match the theme. Either way I can see how you'd think its lame, but it is funny to see people wearing mullets without even having to drive to Edmonton.

Also, aren't people who get all "dolled up" to go to the clubs doing basically the same thing just not to the same extreme? I think any club in Calgary is just as cheeesy in terms of dress.

Meh I don't really feel like opening this bag of worms, I don't like themed parties. In fact I'm supposed to go to one this weekend, the theme is "crazy sunglasses" but I will just wear my regular sunglasses and have just as much fun as if I bought some novelty ones.

IMO the worst people to come to theme parties are the people who mail it in though. I mean, yeah, a sunglasses party is bunk... but just showing up in regular glasses is going to get you nowhere. I would say (if I was single) in the name of getting some action alone, I would go buy some $10 shades somewhere.
