Maybe Trader can be used for some scam baiting here... it might be too late for this one because I've asked for vins etc etc, and he probably wont reply, but man this could be fun.

From previous experience, I know that the price of $4800 is exactly the price needed to get people to call. You put your price in as $5000, you get nothing by way of calls for weeks in a row. $4800, and you get serious calls within 2 days. At $4900 people think you are doing the whole $0.99 thing, but they get serious at $4800. Of course, you still will only get about $4300 at that price. One year I had to sell two vehicles at different times, and I kept trying at higher prices, but ended up only being successful at that price point. At $4800, you can still justify it being in the regular auto trader, instead of in the "under $5000" trader.
The fact that it was at $4800 makes me think the guy has been selling for some time, and knows that this price will get phone calls at the very least - people wanting some quality, but also a deal.

It is good to remind everybody here.
This weekend I was involved in another scam in which I spent a lot time answering his question regarding a pair of expensive speakers. Finally he asked me to ship and he proposed to pay by ebay too. fxxk
Please remember: deal locally never go for shipping.

It is a scam. Autotrader opened up online to free ads and there are a ton on there now. Try on a 2008 Mercedes for $2700.. wow what a deal.
Fun to mess with them though

I would mess with this guy even more except I used a work email to contact him with my phone number etc in it so I'm not really keen on having some arshole knowing where I work etc if I piss him off.

I say contact the RCMP Fraud Squad and get him arrested and sent to prison.
Personally, I would find that a lot funnier than yanking his chain with a few e-mails.
If he's playing a numbers game, he'll just ignore you after a while.

It's real easy to pick out scammers. When they give you their life story, it's a scam. I don't know why these idiot scammers think that a big elaborate story will make it seem more plausible. To me, it just sends up flags of caution because it's so ridiculous.

If you read some of the postings in the ATR's link from post #16, that appears to be exactly how the scam works.
Once you agree to make the purchase, you'll get sent a link to a page that mimics eBay Motors, but none of the links actually go to eBay addresses. Then, you send the money - using a money transfer service - to the "escrow holding company". Once they get your money, they don't care anymore and can abandon the email address they contacted you with and start the scam again (or continue all of the other scams they're running).

Just curious- you say you have emails from this guy.... what do the internet headers say for his IP address?
If it's Canadian, make a call to the RCMP. If it's overseas; I'm not sure there's much they could do.

The Autotrader is full of scammers. Its really gone downhill. If you dont mind losing your money, you can find many vehicles for under $5000 that have a market value several times the amount that the vehicle is being offered at.
