I think the gay community is smart, comfortable and confident enough with itself now that it gets the point of the Bruno character, that he is not making fun of them, but those who are threatened by someone like him. There was a discussion about this on CBC radio this morning with a gay rights group leader. That was pretty much the sentiment as far as he could tell from the gay community about the movie and character.
But isn't it also about making the community outside of the gay community comfortable as well? All that Cohen is doing is going after the lowest common denominator not in an effort to educate, but in an effort to ridicule and embarrass. In other words, he's not helping.

I can't help but wonder how many people who are concluding that Gay pride parades are "to flamboyant" have actually been to a gay pride parade?
Actually sat and watched the entire event, and not just a 10 seconds news clip that is more than likely focused on the overly flamboyant to serve their political agenda and put the idea into viewers heads that the entire parade is as flamboyant as they portray it to be.
I've been to Vancouver's, Atlanta's and I'll be in San Francisco during their gay pride parade. Wow, that's a lot of pride parades.
Sorry, I don't want you to think that I was attacking you in any way.
Dude! Don't apologize, you've made your reputation on Puck by attacking, ridiculing, and making people look like fools. Makes me laugh, don't ever change.

Haha, I think all of them were incidental to my visit. The one in Atlanta was pretty funny because I was there to see a concert with my brother and it just happened to be gay pride week, so like good tourists we headed down to see what was going on. Well, it just happens my brother is a tall, willowy fellow with an affection for wearing jean cutoffs. I think about a dozen people enquired as to the state of our relationship, which was really awkward. After that we started walking about 20 feet apart.
This makes it even worse. Money for Canadian tourism is going into the pocket of an American entertainer? Couldn't they at least find a Canadian to promote?
If people want to see some American entertainer perform, they can buy a concert ticket to see them.
That's because all of the performers at the Stampede, Just for Laughs, and various Jazz Festivals are Canadian, eh?
Sometimes if you want to attract an international audience, you have to have an international performer. Jann Arden is a nice lady and all but she probably wouldn't bring in much of an international crowd.
Not a fan of gay pride parades... what if someone wanted to have a white pride parade? It's just identity politics, pure and simple, with nothing substantial to contribute to the culture.
That said, I have no problem with public displays of homosexuality, as long as they are impressed with the same social norms as everyone else.
Yeah, 'cuz white pride is *all* about diversity and letting others live the way that they like, eh, sunshine?
Then why the FATA should I have to pay for it? Why? It's not that I hate gays, even. It's just that these parades are notoriously sexual and perverted, and it is disgusting to see men in leather thongs, women's makeup, etc.
I hate abortion. I HATE it. In my mind, it's murder. I don't bring this up to discuss the abortion issue, but I bring it up because WHY, WHY THE FATA, do I HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM!??
Pisses me off pretty bad actually. I should learn about tax evasion!!
Woooooosaawww..... Wooooosaawww....
I hate war, why do I have to pay for it?
I hate taxes on liquor and smokes, why do I have to pay for it?
I hate the CBC, why do I have to pay for it?
I hate Quebec, why do I have to pay for it?
etc etc etc

Being gay is a sexual identity. Having a Pride Parade will of course encourage sexualized images because that's what the identity rests upon. It's like having a Caribbean festival with steel drums, dread locks and drum cirlces. Those are the obvious visual indicators of the culture that it's celebrating.
People marching topless or in revealing clothing are not breaking any laws. Why is there such a backlash against people doing this when they're doing so to celebrate their identity. I think there's a wee-bit of disguised homophobia circulating through this thread. "I don't mind if you're gay so long as you don't act like you're gay and don't do things that represent your gay identity." Pretty much runs up against the entire purpose of the event.
How boring would a Pride Parade be if it was just a bunch of guys and girls walking around in t-shirts and shorts??
Am I the only person to find this to be a weird political move? The government gives $400,000 to Pride Toronto which ticks off the soCons and then instead of sticking with the decision they compound their problem by demoting the minister responsible for giving the money. And the info was voluntarily released by a no-name MP who tried to use the demotion as proof to a pro-abortion site that government is truly socially conservative.
The governements has given fuel to social progressives to say that the government is a bunch of knuckle dragging, bible thumping troglodytes while social conservatives aren't too happy that the government gave money to a gay organization. Very odd!

I ask myself those same questions everyday I look at my bank balance.
