Default Cable/internet prices in Calgary

Have a friend who is getting cable for the first time, I use Bell so I'm not much use (nor do I even pay for my satellite/internet).

Called Shaw and it is going to be $90 per month for 70ish channels and high speed internet. That is without the digital box. She didn't want to get one because of the costs of renting them ($3 more IIRC).

Anyways, what does everyone else pay? Aren't there like knew customer deals that she could get? Any better suggestions?

Anyone here work at Shaw/Telus/whoever want to give my friend a deal? (PM me)

The cheaper the better, but TSN, Discovery, Comedy Network, Teletoon, Food Network etc are all desired as is high speed internet (ie not shaw lite). Stuff like movie central would be nice but not a necessity as I'm not sure if it is included in the quote that she got. A digital box would be nice but not needed for sure.

Her TV is HD capable, but they don't watch a ton of TV so unless HD is available for a hell of a deal she'll just skip it, also like I mentioned she doesn't want to have to pay to rent a box if she doesn't have to.

Thanks. But please don't suggest anything that will be MORE expensive than the $90 quote she already got. No matter how great of a deal you might suggest, she's looking for cheaper than $90 for decent cable and high speed internet.

Telus is going to be the cheapest. Right now I pay $70 for phone and internet, and my phone includes a bunch of overseas minutes that I'm sure your friend won't use. Telus keeps calling me to add TV for $20 per month.

Now, my experience with TelusTV has been that the picture has seemed to be craptacular, but if price is the driving factor I would say that she should be able to to do much less than $90 with Telus including a landline.

As for Telus' "high speed" internet, I don't notice a difference between them and Shaw for regular surfing. Downloads do take longer though.

For me, having a digital box to do is totally worth the 3 bucks a month, even if just for the guide. The new smaller DCT are only about $60 IIRC, to buy outright. Or get the older, bigger one used.

I am spoiled by Shaw's employee pricing plan ( which is > 90 bucks a month) and my HD PVR though, so my opinion might not be all that valid.

yea i have x-treme internet and every channel available on digital cable, and my bill is just a hair over $70 a month. that's actually played a factor when considering other job offers vs. sticking with Shaw

I pay 70$ for basic(RE: ANALOG) cable and regular high speed. (yay 22 channels) Watching tv is essentially out of the question except for news, and specific series is satisfied by peer to peer networks.
