The Montreal Canadiens are pleased to welcome the newest addition to the team, Rick DiPietro.
To break down the trade, we felt one of the biggest weaknesses we had this year was our goaltending. Bryzgalov was never consistent enough for us to win enough games. He is a legitimate starter in PHX (inconsistent at times) and is a solid goalie. DiPietro on the other hand is an outstanding goalie but has injury issues. This was a risk we were willing to take as we wanted DiPietro's ratings and feel he can rebound from his injuries.
The outstanding play of Jonas Hiller enabled us to take a bit of a risk on DiPietro because he could very well be a starter in Anaheim next year. This move also does take him off the market.
We did give up our 1st next year, but in a deep draft this year a 2nd rounder is worth a reasonable amount.
Thanks Dan for the negotiations, hopefully this helps our team next year.

Win for the Hawks. MTL 1st in 2010 will be 1st overall and Dipietro will retire this coming season in the NHL.
In seriousness, I like this a bit more for the HAwks because bryz seems to be doing ok for the yotes and Dipi has tons of injury concerns. I'd have swapped the 2 one for one but that is about it.

I agree with you, this trade is likely better for the Hawks right now. There are two reasons I did the trade; one was that the Canadiens haven't had a goalie with a rating 80 or above in over three years and Rick brings that. The other reason is I think Dipietro is a better goalie.
Whether Rick has a healthy year next year will ultimately determine if this trade is good for the Habs or not, but it does make my team better either way.

The big issue for Dipietro is how much of a hit he'll take on his DU and EN ratings after an injury plagued season.

Be gentle.....
That's always the risk moving guys before the re-rates, I guess we'll just have to see how the deal ends up working out.

Well I'd still love to have Dipietro - having a young #1 is huge - I've been recylcing through vets for years.

Agreed, which was why I was willing to take the risk. It's impossible to find a young goalie in this league, nobody wants to move them....so that's why I took on the risk of DiPietro's health issues. I guess we'll see after re-rates if it was a good move on my part.

With this new RFA grid I'll be interested to see how it affects goaltending. There are quite a few UFA guys like Ellis, Niitymaki, Garon, Conklin who'll be like 75-76 guys and really are backup goalies. Will teams lock them up to grid deals? Than you'll have some RFA guys who due to lack of games played will have similar type ratings like Hiller and Rinne who you no longer can sign for like 2 million a year you'll have to pay them like 4 and more if you want term. Seems like any starter who can stand on his feet for 10 minutes without falling over makes 8 million or more in this league so at what point do teams say...I can't commit 15 million to my goaltending?

I will always have a spot in my heart for DiPietro
I was able to then flip him for Khabby and damn near upset the Wild in my first season with the Jets. Still my best trade in the league, its been really downhill since then.

For that exact reason Hiller should be expecting a 1-year deal until he has the chance to prove himself one way or the other.

Oh I remember that trade, it was made with the Preds and yours truly was messing up that team at the time.
