FYI - Bankers Hall Confirmed a case of Swine flu
Just got this email...
Earlier today Brookfield Properties was advised of a rumour involving the swine influenza in the Bankers Hall Complex. Upon investigation we have discovered that the child of an employee in the building has a confirmed case of swine influenza contracted while in Mexico. This employee has no symptoms but has been sent home by the employer as a precaution, until further notice. Janitorial staff will be conducting extra sanitising of this employees work area, floor, and washrooms this evening - again as a precaution only.
Please be reminded once again that the Public Health Agency of Canada advises vigilance and good common sense sanitary practices. Good health habits to help prevent the flu include:
1. Avoid contact with people who are sick
2. Stay home when you are sick
3. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
4. Wash your hands frequently
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as much as possible
Symptoms usually include those similar to seasonal influenza (flu) including headache, chills and cough followed by fever, loss of appetite, muscle aches and fatigue, runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes and throat irritation. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may occur in adults as well as in children. In more severe cases, or in people with chronic conditions, complications such as pneumonia may develop. (Source: The Public Health Agency of Canada)
If any of your employees present the symptoms described above, advise them to contact their own doctor's office for further advice and direction. In the unlikely case that any of your employees are, in fact, diagnosed with this form of the virus, please advise Building Management so that appropriate measures can be undertaken to mitigate any spread of the virus.

Who cares, this swine flu is blown out of proportion, don't further the hype.
If they reported every case of regular influenzas and all the deaths, swine flu would be nothing to talk about.

I guess the question is- who did this email come from? The person who's name is at the bottom, or somebody else who forwarded it?

Is it really any more deadly than normal flu? More people are catching it is all.

Is it really even more people? There are what, a whopping 13 people with it in Canada? I am pretty sure more people on the floor in my office building get the flu every year...

My sister in law got back from Mexico last week and she was sick for about 5 or 6 days after she got back. Cough, headache, sore throat, sneezing and runny nose. She went to the Doctor twice in that time and he said it wasn't related to the Mexico thing.
Now I am not a doctor nor a rocket scientist but it's some sort of virus related to the swine flu if not the swine flu itself. She went with about 20 other people and about 10 others were sick after they got back as well.

Forward it to your HR rep and ask if they have had heard anything about this.
Just don't forward it to anyone else until you have confirmation from HR.
They expect to get this type of stuff.

It's not unusual to get sick when you travel, you're being exposed to different sets of things.
My wife's work asked her to get tested for it since we just got back from Mexico last week.

I don't know if they know for sure yet, but if the trend of young healthy people 18-24 being hardest hit is in fact a reality (it's been reported, but I don't think by any actual authority, just the media), then it may very well be more deadly than the normal flu, in that it generates an overreaction by the immune system and that overreaction does more harm killing the person (that's one possibility anyway).
Is it a full blown emergency? Of course not.
Is it the normal flu? No, it's a brand new strain, and there probably isn't enough data yet to tell how deadly it is compared to anything else, hence the caution.

Cytokine storm is apparently what we have to worry about. That would likely result in younger healthier people having a more severe reaction because of a stronger immune system. (Spanish Flu)
So far there has been one fatality in North America (that I've heard of) and that was a two year old in Texas. So.. pretty much a normal target for a flu related fatality.

This map is hysterical. It makes it seem like 1/2 the globe is infected...

They should color in a section proportional to the population of that country. Stuff like this is fear mongering at its best.

Yup, but even then that hasn't been confirmed to be the case for this flu.
