WHO plans emergency session over deadly Mexico flu outbreak
The World Health Organization is convening an emergency meeting amid reports on Friday that a deadly outbreak of more than 800 "influenza-like" cases in Mexico is caused by a new strain of swine flu that has potentially crossed into the United States.
Mexican authorities said Friday that samples tested both at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control were positive for swine flu viruses.

First bird flu now pig flu, hopefully it doesn't get out of hand.

Yeah, it's pretty big news down here. Doesn't sound too worrisome, but it's just another indication that viruses are mutating and adapting at least as fast as we can keep up with them.
Thankfully, oseltamivir and zanamivir (two antiviral drugs) have been very successful in limiting this strain's damage on humans. It's also good news that swine flu cannot be contracted by eating pork products.

Man, if I have to die of a global pandemic...
I really hope it isn't "swine flu." That just sounds bad.

Just a heads up. My dad is a infectious disease specialist who was one of the doctors in charge of Alberta's SARS planning committee and he seems genuinely worried about this.
