My humble apologies. I will try hence forth to be a bigger jerk.
I mean, who are you to call me out. What, don't you think before putting your thoughts on keyboard and hitting submit? Go crawl back under your rock.

So, the greatest outdoor show on earth isn't that great anymore, and needs taxpayer money to operate?
Why does that not sound right to me? Is the Stampede loosing money every year?

Then I can set up a toll booth for out of towners for driving on Deerfoot.

I think what draws people's ire is that anyone who knows anything about the Stampede realizes its a license to print money. Not only that, but its not exactly a great deal. The money would be better spent giving each Calgarian $3. Seriously, and thats with full acknowledgement that the "3 dollar stimulus" is stupid.
Now say the Calgary entry was the Philharmonic, or the Folk Festival or something along those lines... I think people would be a little more accomodating.

And you'd think that casino they are running 24 hours a day on the Stampede grounds would keep them afloat without government handouts.

I thought some other guy owns Stampede and Deerfoot casinos? So that explains why the Stampede itself has no money from that...

Yup. Just like you're the boss of the Calgary Police Service and you decide what should be aired on CBC.

Until Alberta can do away with its rural socialist/social conservative strangehold, I'd be a little concerned about going it alone. Our voters don't exactly inspire me.
Back to the Stampede... you'd think they'd be able to break even from the Stampede on the 10-day event alone, not to mention their exorbitant lease rates, function costs and parking fees throughout the year. Truly sick.

From what I read it doesn't sound like the Stampede needs the money but because free money is being offered they're going to apply for it. I think most people would do the same.
Quote:

Calgary Stampede spokesman Doug Fraser said the annual 10-day event hasn't received many federal dollars in recent years – only $24,000 in agricultural funding in 2008 – but welcomes more all the same. “We felt if the money is available, we would certainly apply for it – and we are.”

Maybe I should apply for some money to finance a whiskey drinking and fist fighting gala out here in Drum to celebrate the community's mining heritage. That should fit the bill as a cultural event, yes?
