So if I disable roaming, now I'm concerned that if I turn my iPhone on to use wi-fi it will connect with a tower and I'll see roaming charges. Will that happen and what can I do about that?

You might want to call them to confirm, when I talked with Fido they said the only way to make sure was to leave my phone off, or leave it in Airplane mode, I guess if there's a way to disable the cell phone radio and leave the wifi on that would work too.

I believe I can basically turn my iPhone into an iTouch by taking out the sim card, right?? I bellieve this disables the phone part, does it not? How do I remove the sim card? Is it that tiny hole in the top right corner? Can I use a paperclip to do this?

You got a tool that does it in your iPhone box. And it is called an iPod Touch.

I've asked this before I think, but are we able to text across Canada, and not get charged extra if we have an unlimited texting plan?

Across Canada yes, internationally no.

Just leave it in airplane mode with wifi on. I've traveled to the US and Mexico and never had a problem.

You don't want to cripple your phone when traveling just in case. I've only used data roaming once while in Boston because I was so damn lost and had to check the map.

Doesn't putting it into airplane mode also disable wifi connectivity?

Hi I have a question.

I am not a typical gadget guy, but I recognize how an iPhone could significantly help me out with my memory, directions etc.

What is your real monthly cost of owning an iPhone. What can I realistically expect to pay and budget for?

So I can put my iPhone into airplane mode but still use wi-fi? Doesn't that partially defeat the purpose of airplane mode?

I don't think you have to worry so much about roaming charges. Those charges are typically going to be for phone calls. So just don't answer the phone and you won't get dinged. As far as I recall from my work bills, I didn't get any charges for received text messages when working in the US.

In any case, the data roaming is what will kill you, so if you set data roaming off, then you'll be fine.

Yeah that works, if you have the box the phone came in there is actually an extraction tool that is in the manual sort of thing.

Really depends on what your voice/data requirements are, but I think you'd be looking at $60-70/month. If you don't have a plan already, I would suggest going to the cellphone booth at Costco, they have had some amazing offers in the past.

There are a bunch of insightful threads on this type of topic at www.howardforums.com - you might want to take a quick peek...

Hope that helps...

Kind of. Then again you aren't going to do anything to the plane by leaving air plane mode off.

If it was a safety issue then all kinds of planes would be falling out of the sky because pilots talk on their phones all the time.

Pilots are not on their phones all the time, I can assure you.

It usually isn't a safety issue, but transmitted signals can cause interference at critical times, particularly on approach. Usually not an issue, but it can be.

What did Mythbusters find. I've always wondered about that - if I turn on my phone while in the air the plane will suddenly fall from the sky or something. We all know it's not true. It if was, all a terrorist would have to do is turn on his phone and down she goes. I'm curious about what Mythbusters determined, however.
