Default Linkedin network

A colleague I haven't heard from in awhile has sent me an invitation to join her professional network at linkedin.com. I clicked on the link and it asks me to enter my contact information, company information, etc. I don't know if I should do this. I don't want to offend this person but don't see why I should do this. Does anyone know what linkedin.com is? Should I join? Would you join if someone sent you an invite?

It is the most often cited networking site for professionals. It is quite reputable. Whether you want to be a part of it or not is another question.

It's where everyone that used to use facebook but now hates facebook because that's where everyone that used to use myspace goes went.

It's been useful for keeping in touch with old managers and will probably increase more in prominence as we continue to lose our jobs and need to maximize our networking.

There are sub-groups for those with technical/sales certifications and I think those will be useful as there's often job postings in there.

In 2/3 years of using linkedin, i havent got one real-life use out of it. the only time i ever use it, is to go and and approve or deny someone's friend request. I have no idea why i even do it.

I've used it to keep in touch with people that I have worked with. Think of it like a Facebook for a professional crowd. I have not used it to hire someone, even though that is how they like to bill it.

i use it a lot but it might be the space I am in (online marketing) and that people are all over Canada and the US. It's not like being an oil and gas engineer in Calgary where 80% of them are within a 12 block radius.

Most of my colleagues are on it, suppliers, contacts etc. It is still just basic networking, but that alone can be valuable.

For those who don't hit up the networking subforum, I recently setup a CP LinkedIN group.

Sure. What thread was it from if you remember? If not I will just change it.

My smartass remark was going to be "you have not worried about looking ######ed up to know, what changed?" but I was worried even green text may not convey the necessary tone.
