Do they have to worry about inbreeding up there with such a small population? Do they ever need a fresh supply of man juice to keep things copasetic (from a genetic perspective)? If so, PM me with the details.

A permit can be refused if someone has a history of getting out of control or causing scenes in public. Also if someone is ordering every week it will probably be refused for fear it is being bootlegged.
Some communities here are completely dry and bootleggers can get $200+ for a 26er. There is also a limit to what I can order but it is pretty good. I am allowed 6 things per order. It can be 6 flats of beer or 6 bottles of rum. Any combination of 6 items. Just a fyi, a gram of weed is $50.
If booze comes in, most people know where it is going. Most break ins are caused by people looking for booze. For the most part, drinking is really frowned upon here.

Lots of cousins end up in relationships becuase it is so small and isolated. A fresh supply of man juice would be welcomed I am sure!

Hard to say. I plan to be here for awhile. I can see myself staying in the north but long term goal would be to get to a place like Yellowknife. Still northern living but with the amenities of a city.

Is it a religious or spiritual community?
Any "medicinal" plants growing out there on the tundra?

Catholic nuns and priests came and brainwashed everyone maybe 70 years ago. Not only did they manage to change the Inuit way of thinking, they abused the children at the school. Most people have forgotten their old beliefs and you hardly hear of shamanism anymore. It's pretty sad.

Thanks again for posting the pictures. It looks really beautiful up there... especially when looking at pictures because you can't feel the cold.
I was wondering what the medical situation is there? Is there a doctor in the town? If someone has an emergency, how far would they have to travel and how long would it take to get there (by plane or helicopter I'm assuming?)?
Also - are you going to get married in Chester?? Would you pretty much have to invite the whole town?!

A doctor comes here once a month. There is a health center and nurses available 24/7. If there is an emergency you are flown out on plane to Winnipeg.
Yes, the wedding will be in Chester!

Oh, I can well believe that having went to a school run by priests and having a nun and a priest for an Aunt and Uncle. Got the living bejazus kicked out of me at school.
Biggest interfering hypocritical b'tads on the planet.
Anyways, thanks MJK, this is a great thread.
What's a traditional Inuit wedding?

So do most people shop for household items, clothing, etc by catalogue, or...? If you don't have any restaurants I'm assuming the retail store selection isn't exactly overwhelming!

You can do food mail here. You order from a list and it is sent up on the plane. Not the best selection of groceries here and very hard to get fresh fruit and veggies.
The stores have some household items but most can be ordered by catalog.

Interesting life you have chosen! I've got a buddy who flies in there for a month or two as a travelling doctor. He says he appreciates the experience, but only for 1-2 month stints.
How often do you get snow days? And what volume of snow does it take?

Blizzards here can last for 4-5 days, non stop. Visibility is zero for that time and it doesn't clear up. I know in Newfoundland when there is a blizzard the wind gusts but here it rips at 100KM without hesitation. January is our worst month for blizzards. In total this year we have missed maybe 9 days for weather.
Blowing snow is the biggest problem and is the reason school is canceled. No one goes out becuase you can't see a thing. It would be dangerous to drive in and it would be very easy to get lost. We also have drifting problems so it is no trouble for us to get a 10 foot drift in the middle of the street.
