Vancouver Whitecaps now an MLS team!
Yay! Now hopefully they can get that Gastown Stadium built. It's going to be so cool to have the highest pro soccer league in North America here. The influences from Commercial Drive are a big part of this and people are partying down there right now.
Bring it on Toronto FC, we're waiting for you.....

If they are throwing $365 million into BC Place, don't bet on it. No way in hell that much money gets spent for nine football games and a couple trade shows a year...
And really, if they are going to put that much money into it, why not just blow up BC Place and build from scratch? You would probably end up with a better stadium that way.

Great news, I probably won't be a real big fan of this team due to my extreme dislike of anything Vancouver but as a huge fan of Canadian soccer I couldn't be happier. The Caps have done a hell of a lot more than Toronto FC in developing and playing young Canadian talent in recent times and indications are this will continue.

Hell, I'd probably cheer for the Whitecaps over Toronto on Western principle alone.
That, and I despise North American SOCCER teams that use European names. The real Toronto FC plays in Skydome as members of the CFL. And of all of Real Salt Lake's fans, I bet no more than six speak Spanish.
DC United is the only one of these I'll make an exception for, based only on the irony of anything being "united" in a government town.

Won't be long before there is another failed franchise in Vancouver.

The waterfront stadium would be 100% privately funded, the only reason it isn't being built now is a couple minority groups looking fror a reason to complain that have delayed the process. IMO, it's not a matter of if but when that stadium will be built.
As for BC Place, I remember reading in the paper that blowing up the building would be almost as expensive as building a new one.

You think they would have failed by now if they were gonna fail.

Great news.
I've followed the Whitecaps in the past. One of my favourite past Liverpool players, Peter Beardsley, played for them at one time and I've always been interested in them since then.

Coming from a Calgary based forum, and our literal ocean of failed sports franchises, we don't have any place trying to belittle Vancouver.
The Whitecaps have been around for a long time, and its good to see soccer develop in North America. Maybe one day, we'll grow up and support even A-League soccer here.

they just said on foxsportworld
that they will be playing in bc place stadium with the lower bowl having a special configuration for soccer that will seat 20 000 when the renovations are finished, for what that is worth
i also found this on the ap story
Changes in the domed stadium, which will seat 20,000 spectators for the MLS team in its lower bowl, will be based along those found at the home venue of Eintracht Frankfurt of the German Bundesliga.

Yep. The renderings are on the MLS Vancouver website. It actually looks very nice.
Still though, the plan is to eventually be playing in a soccer-specific stadium on the waterfront.

I would really like to see the Waterfront stadium built, but they've been dragging their feet for years about actually allowing it.
That said, I'm thrilled about this. I take in ~5 or 6 'Caps games a year as it stands now, if I'm still living here in 2011 I'm definitely picking up a pair of season tickets.

This has been a HUGE pet peeve of mine for a while. I don't know what it is about this that just irks me so much.

Watch the Whitecaps win an MLS championship before the Canucks win a cup.
