If you are from Calgary, phone the Winter Club up in the NW, up 14st.
and most rec facilities have sheets of ice they use for curling, ask or phone there as well. Okotoks has quite a few sheets for curling in their Rec Center.

I'm not sure that you need "lessons"- in the same way that people don't take softball lessons. I would call these places and ask about beginner curling; and start that way.
At least that's how I learned to curl.

I agree on the lessons part, but only to a point. I learned to curl in Jr High on a school trip. Had I not had professional instruction I think it would have taken me a longer to get the hang of it and I never would have really understood the theory and proper technique behind it. That said, if you get an experienced guy to come out and show you the ropes for an hour, that is all it takes.
My dad always used to say that learning to curl is almost all about spending time on the sheet throwing rocks.

Here is a link to what the Calgary Curling Club offers: http://www.calgarycurlingclub.com/learntocurl.pdf
I suspect most of the clubs in the city can arrange lessons if you want. Just be aware that the season is just about over so clubs will be removing their ice around the end of the month.

One of the people in my league did this. Sounds like a good program. Many clubs have someone around that will do classes, and usually the skip or third on a team can give some advise as well. Really, the basics of curling can be taught over a few hours, but you need to get a lot of practice in to figure out how to balance properly.
And ya, many clubs are close to finishing the season, so you might need to look into it for next year.

If anyone can find a place that keeps their ice through the whole year (I believe there are spring/summer leagues running at some places) and want someone to split the cost of ice rentals, I'd be interested in getting out and practicing once or twice a week.

I would settle for a decent Wii Curling game. Think combo of Wii Bowling for throwing and Wii Boxing for sweeping.

Curling looks pretty easy from watching it, you just throw a rock right? But man, when you actually get out there, it definitely takes a while to get used to. But very fun game. Takes a lot of skill.

That is the way to do this; set up a team and go have some fun. You'll have some trouble for the first while and not win a lot maybe, but get a few guys together and have a drink after. Curling is a great social sport, and really the way to learn is get out there as many have said already!

Are you typically allowed to drink beers while out on the ice, or do you have to save it for th elounge?

Typically you have to save it for the lounge. Back in the day you could drink and smoke on the ice (if you were into that!). A guy in my league has the broom that twists apart for his liquor though...its frowned upon as the liquor will ruin the ice, but I guess if you need a drink bad enough it works!

If you follow this advice, you'll spend your first season learning how to balance, without the slightest clue that you can't hit the broom, and the following 8 seasons learning to un-do the lousy techniques you've developed by yourself.
Get someone to teach you. Doesn't have to be a professional if you know a good curler who will help, but you don't want to just go out and try it. At least, that's if you ever want to play up to your potential.

I might be interested, if the timing is right. I was thinking of getting into another league next season.
