Default So I Hate Doing My Taxes

I really hate doing my taxes. Yes I tried the online/cd tax software and I still hate it. I'm not sure how I manage to screw up the easiest of things when it comes to taxes, but I do.

The only real alternative I know of for my situation is H&R Block. Does anybody have any recommendations or is the Block the way to go?

I do it myself super easy. The only part I hate is the part where this year I owe $860. I hate Telus.

hmm ... that part does suck pretty hard. Is Telus actually related or are you just venting a casual hatred for them?

I did it myself last year and even though I thought it went well I still got the old "hey you screwed up your taxes and need to send us the following documents" letter in the mail. I'm not an overly proud man and am more than willing to admit when I have been defeated.

I just did my taxes online last night in about 20mins and depending on if I want to adjust my RRSP contribution, should be getting a fairly decent to very decent return. I love that I don't have to deal directly with the forms anymore (I can't read them at all....they may claim to be in English but they're all Urdu for all I comprehend)...and don't even need to bother with a stamp.

Russic, why not see if you have a friend who can do it for you? You must know someone who can help you get 'em done right. My dad does this in exchange for a case of beer every year and hasn't had a problem yet. Either way, good luck if you go the H&R route!

Firefly, that sucks......here's hoping you finding a misplaced decimal and discover they owe you or something instead.....

don't go to H&R Block for the most part they feel the same way you do... they get like 8-10 days of training a most of that is just plugging numbers in to their tax program.

I hate getting tax returns. It just means that I gave the gov't an interest free loan all year. I'll be getting about $15k this year. Really could've used that during the year.

I take mine to the Block and get a check 30 mins later. I could care less if it costs me $50 bones.

H&R Block only will do the basic. Most online software, from what I've seen, double checks things you wouldn't have thought of.

H&R Block is basically T4 > Computer > Cheque/Report to CRA.

I think I'm going to try the online software this year for the first time. Paying $50 for my wife's and my taxes, each, is a bit much for what we get back.

No, I didn't quit Telus until February... right around the time we got our variable pay. With all my holiday pay and whatnot paid out on my last cheque, apparently I made $8500 in a month and a half. Really, it's not their fault they screwed me, it's mine for not taking that into consideration. Put me in a tax bracket above what I make here... So, with that $4000 gap in income, it's just enough that my deductions won't cover it.

Wanna give me $860 of that?

Anyone who likes getting a tax refund can just lend me the money and I'll give it back to you in the spring. No interest, but that's what you're doing now anyway. I like owing them.

I prefer to pay at the end of the year also. I'd rather the money be sitting in my bank making money as opposed to the govt.

Don't go to H&R Block, unless you have the simplest of returns, and in that case if you do, you should do it yourself.

What he said. Anyone can do a simple return and save the money.

Plus their quality is terrible!
We have to fix a lot of mistakes on returns prepared by them.

Well if you have a way for me to write off something like moving expenses effective the day I moved I'd be into that. I wasn't aware of any way to have my employer deduct less taxes based on something like a move. With the end of my job near...another move is probably in my near future, and I could use the money immediately.

It does not mean you did it wrong. It just means CRA wants you to prove that you actually have the things you are claiming
