Default Westhills Superstore mouse bonanza

Just a heads up...

Fiancee and I were only 2 items into the shopping cart when we saw one staff member chasing a mouse. We promptly turned the corner to hear another customer say that she had seen 4 other mice scurry from the chip aisle not 10 seconds earlier... 5 mice.

We promptly abandoned the shopping cart and left and went to Safeway. Not too worried about bagged goods, but god knows what shenanigans and other general tomfoolery goes on with the fruit when no one is around.

I understand it's a big store, doors are open all the time and it probably happens more often than I'd like to know... but still. Pretty indicative of a mouse infestation / problem.

You have to realize, every grocery store has mice. It's just whether or not you see them or not. As the Calgary health inspector says, it's on a "by reported" basis that they inspect or close stores.

My dad worked at safeway before and told me there were mice in the back too.

File a complaint with the health department.

Sounds like Superstore does a poor job of pest management.

Yeah, but I want my mice in the meat section, not in the produce!

Yeah, I'm sure it happens a lot more than I'd like to imagine... But never have I seen them scurrying around in a busy supermarket.

All stores have mice problems, it's just that some do a poor job of pest management.

For every 5 you see there is probably 100 that you don't see. A good pest control regime should eliminate all but a few of the mice. I know most stores have pest control visits regularily. When I worked at Futureshop we had pest control there once a month, sprayed the exterior and set out traps. We never had an issue, mostly preventative. I don't know about Superstore.

I worked for Safeway for a number of years and in different stores. Never saw a mouse on the sales floor. They were always confined to the backroom as Safeway generaly had a good handle on the mice problem.

Westhills or Westwind? The previous problem was at Westwind in the north.

I worked at a Debajis back in the day ... man there was a mouse problem that would freak you out. My four most memorable stories are:

1. Putting a watermelon out on a table and for some strange reason giving one a second look. In the back of it was a mouse sized hole filled with mouse feces. Not sure why I gave that watermelon a second look. To this day not a big fan of watermelon.

2. The bakery would always get giant pails of butter delivered to them. Once we found one that had a complex Viet Cong-like tunnel system dug out of it with a fat mouse living inside. I assume he was the leader.

3. We played "moustrap price is right" one day. The object of the game was to guess the number of dead mice in the traps around the store - whoever guessed closest without going over won. If I recall I was the winner with 19.

4. One day a mouse decided that he had enough of this world and decided to pass into the other. Legend has it that it was the butter tunnel mouse who'd reached the peak of living and couldn't stand the fact that he'd achieved perfection and had nothing to work towards. We also had a cafe waitress that could have been considered the most skittish and jumpy of all the workers. For whatever reason the mouse picked her to be the only witness to his recital of the macabre. He jumped off the highest ledge in the back room and did a faceplant into the concrete not 3 feet from her. I thought she was going to piss herself. It was a brilliant way to go.

Not that I needed another reason to avoid both Westhills or Superstore, but thanks anyway!
