This was close, though. Apparently they had the Emergency Broadcast System ready to go and a message recorded and everything. Sounds like we wouldn't have had enough time to do anything anyway. Something like 16 minutes.

Calgary dodges space junk
Apparently Calgary was nearly hit by a piece of rocket debris the size of a pickup truck yesterday. The province was within seconds of issuing a public warning notice when the debris deflected off the earth's atmosphere and changed its trajectory, ending up in the Atlantic Ocean. That's quite a discrepancy, but it sounds like the threat was pretty real for a bit.
From the Calgary Herald:
"A piece of space junk the size of a pickup truck hurtling toward Calgary changed course in the nick of time, saving the city from disaster Friday."
"Officials scrambled to organize for the worst-case scenario. If the object had struck in a residential area, "it probably would have been significant loss of life," Lloyd said."

That's kind of scary stuff. It sounds like humanity's littering habits have hit critical mass out in space too, what with this and the two satellites colliding recently.

It would be interesting to know what part of Calgary it was going at. That sounds scary though, kinda similar to a plane crashing into your home

I suppose it could be easy to figure out. (if i was good at math)
37% of the earth is land
80% of of the 6 billion people on earth live along or within 100 miles of the coasts or about 10% of the land.
Since I'm not smart enough to put in writing my math I'll take a wild stab at between 3-4% chance of it hitting a heavy populated area.
