Teen banned from volunteering after Don Cherry chat
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20090130/cherry_ban_090130/20090130?hub=Canada
I thought maybe the owners were a little hasty banning the kid until I saw their claim... What a joke. After reading his damage claims, it sounds like this kid was a punk who ignored his bosses, and his dad has a vendetta and a payday on his mind.
Quote:
Banning the boy from the arena was wrong because the job was helping turn his son's life around, Bill Steele said. He's since filed a complaint with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario asking for $100,000 in damages, proper posting of rules, and the firing of the Global Spectrum employee who barred the teen from the arena.

hmmmmmm
I don't have a problem with this at all actually. The amount of the damages is out of line, but this could have been handled a much more appropriate fashion by the arena.
I hope Cherry callst he arena people "pansies"

Showing any affection or admiration for Don Cherry should be a fireable offense in any job, IMO.
Guy's a loudmouthed, closed-minded, self-congratulatory buffoon who can't leave the air fast enough for me.
Outside of his affection for those who give their lives in service of our country, he's got no redeeming qualities in my book.

Any time someone with "ADHD" gets a free pass I puke a little in my mouth. Try having a real disorder and see what it's like. The kid broke the rules 3 times. GTFO you are fired.

Totally agreed. ADHD... wow.
As for the case, it clearly shows why Section 13 of the HRCs needs to be thrown back in to the mound of bad ideas. I can't believe that in addition to damages he is also seeking to terminate the employee responsible for firing him.
Talk about an incredible over-extension of the State's power.

why is that?
For every argument people make against Don Cherry, I can cut and paste to substitute Jack Layton and it equally applies.

You can be a proud Canadian without being xenophobic, you can be confident without patting yourself on the back at every possible opportunity, etc. As I said before, he's a complete loudmouth.

Given that Layton's pretty much reviled around here, I'm not sure how that comparison helps you.

Wow, he got fired from a volunteer position for talking to Don Cherry.
I dont know whether that adds insult to injury, or if its a blessing in disguise.

People can get fired as a volunteer? The rules he broke were pretty weak.
Can we avoid turning this into a I hate Don Cherry rant??
Lol Flip what would you describe as a real disorder?? I didnt realize doctors and psycologists were going around giving people fake learning disabilities.

Agreed. He went and talked to Cherry a few times, big deal.
More people should harass Don Cherry just to remind him what it feels like.

He didn't get fired for breaking a rule, he was fired because he repeatedly broke rules.
It seems more to do with the fact that he has shown that he can't follow the rules more than the fact that he broke a single "weak" rule.
Also, not sure that bringing a friend on to the ice after a game is that weak. Plenty of issues for the people responsible for having someone who is not authorized to be on the ice.

The kid didn't even get fired. He got reassigned.

In the meantime, Steele has been reassigned to work in a production truck outside the Oshawa arena and at other locations where he can continue to film sporting events.

I knew a woman that was 'reassigned' by a catering company because she talked to Hillary Duff after a concert. Pretty big demotion going from the VIP area at Rexall to the right field BBQ pit at Telus Field.

As with this teen getting banned there is more to the story than what first was reported. So tell me, what is the rest of the story with your friend?

Apparently Duff has a rider in her contract where the 'help' isn't allowed to talk to her. The employees were warned of this, but my friend was fan and wanted to say hi anyway.

So she knowingly took that chance and was prepared to suffer the consequences. Which is all good.
Just like this teen that this thread is about. He knew the consequences so suck it up and move on.

Just wondering...what do you consider a "real disorder" in comparison?
If this was a kid with....oh say...Lupus or SID or Epilepsy and they did the same thing would you consider their disorder real?
