Just had Vern's Pizza tonight for the first time. I guess they are a favorite place in saskatoon, I hear from friend from there. Pretty good, I'd go back. Don't know about best in the city but better than any big chain ones which I avoid as much as possible.

The Forbidden Zone in Black Creek. Never had pizza like it. The forbidden size is 18 inches in diameter and loaded with toppings. It's awesome.

I'm a big fan of Greco's on 17th Ave and 36th SW; it's been around since at least the 70's when my parents used to take us there.

(it doesnt compare to when i worked there and could make my own pizzas tho)

Turn onto 61st towards the station, and take the left at the 2nd light, and it's a block or 2 down on your right (I think that's right). I've seen it, but never tried it.

I like Tim's pizzas, he sells them frozen at farmers' markets around the city, I think he is Nick's son or something (you know, "The" Nick)

I haven't tried any of the ones you guys have said, but Coco Brooks is great. Their sausage and cheese pizza is to die for

Grecco's is very good. The only thing that tops it is The Red Carpet on Elbow Dr.

Calgary has some great pizza places........I eat healthy but pizza is my one treat that I could not live without. I avoid all franchises like Domino's, Panago etc. Papa John's is the only one I'd ponder.

Here's my favorites in no particular order,
- Michael's Pizza (10 Ave & 1 St SW).......I recommend going before a Flames game and it is littered with awesome Flames stuff on their walls. Michael himself is a life time season ticket holder and a friendly gent. If you watched old 2&7 Flames games you'd recognize him as his seats were often panned in the crowd after a goal. The Michael's Special is my favorite.
- Mannie's (17 Ave and 8th St SW).........Mannie's All-Meat is the best meat lover pizza out there! Also, not too far from the Dome for a pre-game meal and is open until 4 am on weekends (delivery only) for after the pub!
- Gus's Cafe (across from the Foothills Hospital)......my grandma was in the hospital for a while a few years back and I lived off their pizza when I visited. I recommend Gus' Special!
- Nick's Steakhouse.....my pre-game pizza joint for Stamps games. Nick's Special is where it's at.
- Tom's House of Pizza........my new favorite pizzeria since I am now in the deep SW and not downtown for Michael's and Mannie's. The commericals on the Fan 960 don't lie!

Typically, I only eat deep-dish in Calgary. Not because the other ones are bad, but when you live in the thin-crust Pizza Capital of the World, pizza elsewhere just doesn't measure up. Over X-mas, I went to try that Pulcinella place that everyone was raving about, and found it rather soggy overall (plus the fact that they used canned mushrooms was a bit of a no-no). The crust wasn't bad though, which is good.

HOWEVER, the deep-dish pizza in NY is absolutely awful, and Calgary versions beat it hands down. My favourite used to be the standard Chicago Deep Dish, but I find it really depends which location you order from.

True Table 5. All thin crust pizza is compared to that which is found in NY/NJ if you've lived there. Finally found 2 places close to me in in Fl that seem to get it right. Oddly enough one is owned by Albanians. But yeah they lived in Brooklyn previously.

I have found that Pulcinella is better for the atmosphere than the food. Good for a date with the wife or a couples date but just ok pizza while the 5 I listed above have awesome pizza but more of place to bring the guys/watch sports than a romantic date.

For original Deep Dish, you have to go to source which is Chicago. Giordiano's, Gino's and Uno are all top notch and worth while. I am lucky to be in Chicago a few times a year on business and make sure I make a stop and try to time out a Flames game if I can as well. The Chicago Deep Dish pizza places here in Calgary aren't too bad either but as you said you have to call the right location. From memory the 531-XXXX is the one to check out. I have never been a fan of NY style pizza but maybe haven't found the right places on past visits.

If I were you I'd try Tom's, great pizza, crispy crust and although I'm from Windsor and not New York, they had this place called Trevi's Pizza that was amazing back in the day. I believe it got best pizza in Canada or the World way back when. It was a tradition for the family to go there whenever we went back to visit.
