Wow, I'm 25 and I worked out it is cheaper for me to drive.

For shame, City of Calgary. Transit is only viable if it is always cheaper than driving.

$83.00 per month for a Transit Pass.

OR

$50.00 per month insurance plus gas that can be used at your convenience?

A decent vehicle with a little education through the internet and work with basic tools makes a reliable work commuter.

You must not work downtown at $15-20 a day parking.

$15-$20 is a deal depending on where you need to be.

I know, I went low on purpose.

It would cost me hundreds per month on parking, whatever insurance is, and whatever the cost of a car would be since my wife drives up to the NW and we only have one car.

^ I almost always hop on the train when I have to be downtown....I hate the train, but I can't justify $28 for parking more than 3 hours.

Going?

I don't know, until I read this I had a thought it was going to $90. I'm probably just a year ahead. EDIT: I was right, it is going to $90 by 2011.

i still have the same book of tickets that i bought when starting my new job downtown in November. i hardly ever remember to validate a ticket when i'm in a rush in the morning or half asleep on my way home at night, and never being asked to actually show a ticket doesn't give me a lot of incentive to remember

$83?!? Wow, this is really surprising considering it's consistently gone up $5 for probably the past 5 years. Plus the Park & Ride parking fees (which I'm assuming are still in the works)...

Wow, the City of Calgary does it wrong again. $75 was a lot of money for transit pass. Compare with Edmonton $66.50.

Just bought a book of tickets and a bus pass today. $104!!!

Are you $#"*ing kidding me?
Unreal, once they start charging for Park & Ride, it's just not worth it to even take transit anymore. At that point I find myself a cozy little parking spot in downtown.

I also think they are doing it wrong by punishing the monthly riders. Keep the passes low, the tickets about the same, and raise the price of the cash fare if you have to raise prices.

As it stands now with 19 or 20 work days per month; it will cost with the new fares $95-100 for cash, $87-92 for tickets, or $83 for the month. Once you have somebody who's hubby picks them up a few times per month, or may call in sick once and suddenly its not worth it. Of course CT figures the Monday-Friday commuters will also be using the pass on the weekends too.

Have you been to edmonton? Their transit system is horrendous it takes hours to get anywhere and their train caters to like 20% of the city and is useless to anyone else. It's terrible.

The fine is so high though that if you get caught once it's suddenly no longer a big money saver to avoid validating your tickets.

Isn't the fine only $150? Get caught six times a year (would never happen if you take transit during rush hours) and it's worth it.

Well I have only been in Calgary visiting for 1 week but I see many advantages to Calgary Transit.

The biggest advantage is you can get to places a heck of a lot faster than if you had to drive!!! If I was living here I would pay to take the train rather then drive to work.

This is assuming I worked close to the train of course.

For example. I would park at McKnight station, hop on the train and get to work. Way faster than driving.

My friend, you're either crazy or you don't know how to drive. The only time I'll say that you're right about this is in the dead of winter with an accident or two on your commute.

Someone hasn't ridden the train during rush hour. It's like being in a sardine can with riders fighting for thier inch of space on each car
