Default Help! The Largest Diamond in my Engagement Ring..

has fallen out somewhere in my house and I can't find it!

Does anyone have any clever ideas how to find it? Thought I'd tap into the CP Thinktank for this, because I'm going out of my mind.

Worst case scenario is we claim it on insurance and get it replaced, but I'd really like to find this stone. It's 0.75 carat, colour F, so you'd think it would be big enough to jump out at you if it was just sitting on the floor somewhere.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No pets or kids thankfully. We emptied our vacuum cleaner and then vacuumed a small area, emptied the cannister and searched through the contents... repeated this throughout the house, and found nothing.

I'm quite sure I lost it in the house, but for the life of me I can't find it. I know I can claim it on insurance and replace it that way, but it's just the sentimental value of it that makes this a downer.

Please, everyone out there, make sure you insure your valuables. It's worth it in situations like this.

Check the loo. Sorry I had to make an English reference...

Check the sink traps, perhaps it went down a drain.

My wife has a LARGE diamond, that things costs me 70 bucks a month in insurance...if it is lost in any scenario, it is replaced - no matter the circumstance. I think in a few years she might decide to put it in a safety box, maybe get a fake.

I would go really low and look over every square inch of the floor. It could be stuck in the bottom of a shoe tread, but likely on the edge of the room where the wall hits the floor.

Really? I've never really considered all of the wonderful possibilities that can arise from...putting a wedding ring through the washing machine for....for why exactly?

Did your finance buy it from Spence by chance?

If so, take the ring back and they will replace the diamond for free. Part of their guarantee.

Maybe a super bright light to try and see a reflection/refraction if it falls on it?

Something that small in the whole house, that's tough. Could have fallen down a heating vent, under a gap between the baseboard and the floor, all kinds of places that would be very difficult to find.

Good luck, I'd be choked.

if you have carpets, put a new vacuum bag in the vacuum and go nuts, then cut open the bag and sift through the dust. we found a small diamond from my wife's ring a couple years ago this way.

Also the sink trap, as mentioned is a good place to check. when we moved into our first house, the drain was slow, so i took off the trap and there was a small diamond engagement ring in there! can't believe whoever lost it didn't get it out! crazy.

Wait until it gets dark, turn off the lights and sign a bright flash light across the floor, over the couch etc.
Good luck. That really sucks, I can understand the sentimental value that it holds.

Stop being an annoying dick.

Rings are on hands, hands go into pockets, pockets are on clothing, clothing goes into the washing machine.

No harm to check.

I would go full-on CSI mode. One room at a time spending 10 minutes in each with a flashlight. Like others said, hopefully you just hit it with the light in the proper way and it shines.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all of the tips and suggestions. I've pretty much done all of the suggestions, to no avail. We're leaving on our honeymoon tomorrow to the Maldives, so if I don't find it tonight, it will have to wait until we come back.

Thing is, I know the last time I saw it last night and the time I noticed it missing was all within 1 hour, and I never went outside during that time. I thought it would be so much easier to find than this. Maybe when I come back from holiday I'll be find it with "fresh eyes" so to speak.

To answer the questions, the ring was made here in England, so I don't have the guarantee that Spence has. Kinda wish I did now... Oh well. It can always be worse. I'm still going on an amazing honeymoon, me and everyone I love are healthy and happy, and diamonds can always be replaced.

I'll update if I ever find it. Thanks so much to the CP community. I honestly can't say enough how much I've appreciated CP. You've helped me with this, and you've helped me keep in touch with all things Flames, and Calgary, particularly during my homesick days here in England.

If I don't get a chance to say later, I wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy and Safe Holidays, and an awesome New Year.

And now I'm off to catch my plane.... see ya!

If you know what rooms you were in when you lost it, wait until nightime, when its good and dark, turn out all the lights in your house and get a flashlight. Don't use a high powered one, use a normal sized one, and use the light beam to search the rooms. The diamond will reflect the light. You can also do this when searching vacuum cleaner contents so you don't have to handle all the dust and lint. I found a diamond stud earring this way.

I also lost a diamond out of my ring, looked down and there were only prongs left. I had done a bunch of laundry that day so I started going through all the folded clothes very carefully to see if it was in them. Then I emptied the washing machine slowly looking at all the clothes, no luck. I figured I might as well look in the washer and there it was, the point side was resting right in one of the drain holes so it was face up sparkling right at me. It was really clean too!

Good luck!
