Default BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220

Another smart phone thread, yep, but it's the Tech board, and I figured I'd have more responses in making a new thread instead of asking this in another thread.

Right, so. I've been thinking about getting a new phone for a little while now; while my current one works fine, it's a pretty lame one I got for free upon purchasing a plan at least 2 years ago.

Well, the new(ish) BlackBerry Pearl Flip caught my eye and now I'm seriously considering it. I'm already with Rogers, but currently on a Pay-As-You-Go plan. Getting this phone I'd have to flip over to a contract; a 3 year one if I wanted to get the phone for $49.99 instead of $249.99 and upwards. Going to a contract would be a bit more expensive, but nothing too bad.

So I was just wondering if any CPers have or have used this phone, and if y'all got any reviews for it. I've already read some reviews, but they weren't extensive on battery life and how breakable it is in 'real life'.

Thanks in advance for any responses I may, or may not get, haha.

It's aesthetically pleasing, that's for sure!

I have it and its one of my favourite blackberries I've ever used (currently on my 4th one).

I won't lie, its definitely aimed towards the average user instead of a hardcore blackberry user. The new OS is a great addition for it and its a pretty solid OS. I have had a few bugs with the OS being a tad sluggish but other than that I can't complain (and to put it in perspective, my phone is on 24/7 and usually on for weeks at a tie before it gets reset).

Battery life is pretty decent, atleast after having it for just over a month. I can usually do two days without any charging...that would include a few hundred texts and probably an hour or two of phone time. I still charge it every night though just to be safe.

In regards to breaking and its physical stability, I've dropped it twice from 4-5 feet and it still works fine. A few scratches on the shiny plastic rim from it but that's about it. The one thing that is a slight pet peeve is, atleast with mine, the top half can move ever so slightly to the left and right when its closed. I'm sure this is the same with most flip phones but its a tad annoying.

Overall I'd recommend it. Its a good phone, not as flashy as the Bold or some of the higher end blackberries but I think for the average user its a solid phone.

Excellent, thanks a lot jar_e!

I've never personally owned a BlackBerry before, but I've used my dad's enough to love them.

The fact that dropping it seems quite fine is very reassuring; even though I don't drop things too much, thankfully, haha.

No worries.

Yeah blackberries are addicting if you have friends that use them too....mostly due to blackberry messenger. I'd highly recommend getting data (I think you may have to if I'm not mistaken)...but to put things in perspective...I have the 300mb package and only once I've broken over 100mb in a month.

Definitely good to know.

On the subject of messengers, any small chance you've tried out MSN on it? I read it's do-able, and just have many more friends who use MSN than any other instant messager.

I have tried MSN. Mind you, don't expect to be able to leave it on. I've drained a full battery in a few hours if you leave MSN on. So that kinda sucks. Its great for logging on and chatting for 5-10 minutes and then logging off, but its definitely not set up to be on all the time.

Fair enough, fair enough. I could easily live with that.

I'm out of questions for now, but I know who to ask as soon as.if I think of more.

I know I say it a lot, but thank ya.

I got the phone a little over a month ago and love it sofar. I don't really have much more to add than Jar_e said but would also reccommend the phone. If you don't like fingerprints or smuges i'd reccommend getting a screen protector for it. One of my biggest pet peeve with the phone has been how much finger prints i had on it when I first got it. I went for the cheapest data package, however Blackberry to Blackberry instant messaging doesn't take away from the MB and doesn't cost extra. I figure with WIFI at home, work and school I wouldn't need the data package much so 2MB will be enough for me. Just a word of advice though if you do use WIFI make sure you turn the WIFI off when you don't need it cause you'll be charging the phone everyday, just turn it on when you need it. And the phone is fairly strong i've dropped it a couple times (including on the 2nd day) and got a couple of little scratches on it, that aren't really noticeable.
