Our favorite tavern is closing
Turned on the radio this morning to hear about this, I'm sure this is gonna have a big effect on many of our fellow CPers.

Damn, where am I going to score drugs and get beat up now? Oh wait, the back alley is still open, right?
EDIT: I gotta say though, 1,700 calls to emergency services from this place so far this year? That's completely insane.

I've drank a few beers there. 
A buddy and I used to play racquet ball regularly at the YWCA, which is just up the street from the Cecil, and we would go there for a beer or two afterwards. Cheap.

I haven't been there since the 1980s, when it was a bit safer.
We saw some crazy things there:
1) The Wedding Reception - the happy couple met there - the parents were mortified to be there
2) The TSN Turning Point - one woman was passed out on the dance floor, while people continued to dance around her. She somehow got to her feet, and started dancing again.
3) The Final Straw - one evening, one "lady" spit in my face when I declined her generous invitation to dance.
4) The Warning - a sign at the bar required patrons to "check their knives"
5) The Stalker - another "lady" followed me into the washroom to watch me pee.
6) The Case of Mistaken Gender - one fellow asked my male friend to dance - I don't think he was gay - just to drunk to distinguish between men and women
7) The Horror, The Horror - one friend refused to enter the establishment, and hid in the car in the fetal position

The same people who made the place seedy will just go somewhere else. If I'm a bar owner in that area, I think I'd be a little worried..

My bachelor party ended at the Cecil (not my idea). Actually, that's not true. My bachelor party ended in the emergency room after my best man was assaulted with a weapon. Then we got together over the Christmas break for a nice reunion at the trial of the guy who put my best man in the hospital.
Good times.

This is the only place I've seen a passed out person get dragged into the bar from the alley, and propped up in a chair.
I think I met this woman also...

For people familiar with the Vancouver and Calgary bar scenes, how does the Cecil compare with the Ivanho in Vancouver? I haven't been to the Cecil, but the stories remind me a lot of the Ivanho.

As a building, the Ivanhoe is far far worse.
I couldn't give an opinion on the clientele though, having never gone in either.
