Nevermind, no changes needed.
Now that I've upgraded to the lastest version, we're going to be making a few other changes to help improve things on the site.
One of the limits we're hitting is our server Internet connection pipe, and some logs analysis shows that half the bandwidth of the site comes from GIF files and Javascript files. That's pretty significant.
So we're going to be doing the same thing with avatars that's currently done with the sig images; you'll have to host your avatars on a different webspace. We'll be doing something similar with all the site's built in images and other files (like Javascript files).
This will be coming up soon, so I'd say right click and save your avatar for now, and when all the avatars disappear you'll know to upload it again.
I'll probably also take all the avatars and make a web page of them or something just so people can find theirs if they don't read this message in time.

Thanks Photon, and for all the work being done too, very grateful.
So if I currently have my avatar (animated gif or otherwise) on a site like photobucket, I should be OK, after I reinstall it after they disappear?

Had an idea!

So, just upload them in Imageshack, and host it here?

Yeah I just noticed that, I think I do that every single time I upgrade..
I'll get the ones from the backup and reupload them properly.

Alright I made a change on the server with regards to avatars, let me know if anything weird goes on. If this works, everyone will continue to use their avatars as normal.

Actually looks pretty good from here, hopefully no changes will be needed from the user's side.
False alarm.

Are we going to have more leway to what we have as our avitars? File size, et all?
I'd love to have a running FPAG gif as my avitar, and if it's not hosted on CP, would there be anything against the file size?

I hope that this part doesn't change.
For those on slow (work) connections, it doesn't matter who's bandwidth (CP's or Photobucket's) is being used - it still impacts how the CP page loads.

I think we'll be able to bump it up a bit, but not too much for the reason calc says.
EDIT: I still would like to put in some themes for mobile devices so that would probably work for low bandwidth users as it probably wouldn't show avatars.

And actually it looks like the setup we made to offload the avatars from the forum but keep them in control of the forum software was successful, so this thread is can die since no changes will have to be made.
