About the compilation thing, wouldn't it be simplest to say that a compilation album has to be a compilation? That means no full albums, no complete catalogues.

I think to limit the number of CD's is very arbitratry, and some bands and artists have best-of compilations that are 3 or even 4 CD's. I don't see the problem with that.

I for one was possibly going to pick a compilation that has 3 CD's, doesn't span the bands entire career, has about one third of not-on-albums material, has a bunch of new songs and so on. Why shouldn't I be able to pick that?

Itse, yeah a 2-CD limit is arbitrary. If you were to state your case as you've just done, I'm sure the Commish would approve it. The rule is there to prevent someone from picking a boxset consisting of a band's entire career.

Like troutman said, this is for fun. Drawing a hard line with insistence on following rules to the letter isn't.

With the 5th pick overall, in the Greatest Hits / Compilations category, I pick Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era.



The original Nuggets album is a greatest hits collection for the original wave of garage rock 1-hit wonders: all those fuzzed-out 60s, shaggy acts who's lives changed when they heard 'Louie Louie'. This is the first American response to the British Invasion: the sound of hundreds of dumb teenagers getting very, very high and trying to re-write 'Satisfaction'.

The original record has been reissued a bunch of times, and expanded to a whole box set. The box is great, but it's the original double album that has all the crucial cuts: The Standells, The Electric Prunes, Count 5 (read the Lester Bangs essay about how he learned to love 'Psychotic Reaction' if you ever get a chance), The Remains, The Nazz, and a whole bunch of other 'The' bands. This is punk rock's ground zero.

You know something though, if you put a gun to my head I don't think I could give you my favorite Soundgarden record. I can't pick. I've been playing Superunkown over and over for about the last month. I had actually forgotten about a few of the songs on it that are so much better than the radio hits. Love that record too!
