Does that make MSN open links in Firefox? Or is MSN's file handling of URL's controlled internally instead of by the system variable?

It wont MSN forces you to use IE, which is why I suggested Trillian or another 3rd party IM client

If I knew how to reinstall IE, I would....but alas, I don't.

So, what DO I do?

Try installing the latest Service Pack for Windows XP (assuming you have XP.) The version of MSVCRT that you have is not the most recent. Firefox may work, but you could eventually run into problems with other programs.
