Radar detector will not catch laser which most law enforcement use now to catch speeders. Don't know about the legality of it or anything, I just wonder about the point of it.

They work. But by the time you detect the radar the radar has caught you anyway

They work really well against the RCMP... other forces, not so much. I still find a lot of the RCMP use radar and leave it on, giving you advanced warning.

Situations where a detector is useless:
1. Using instant-on radar, which gives you no warning.
2. Laser
3. Probably more, but I have to rush out the door.

Plus they go nuts in parking lots when you drive past automatic doors, lol.

Actually, if you can rig one of those automatic door sensors to your front bumper, it jams the radar. Or so I heard when I was alot younger. I don't remember any of the science behind it.

I think you want a Laser Jammer, that's what I have in my car and it actually scrambles the signal vs just detecting it. Haven't got a speeding ticket in many years and never had anyone say anything about it being illegal.

I would not be surprised if they are but the amount I save on tickets, meh.

I found a few sites saying the same thing:

Illegal:
Newfoundland
Nova Scotia
Prince Edward Island
New Brunswick
Quebec
Ontario
Manitoba
Yukon
Northwest Territories

Legal:
Saskatchewan
Alberta
British Columbia

I am with HOOT on this one, get a Laser Jammer. I have jammers in two cars of mine and no tickets for the last 5 years.

The provincial Sheriffs most often use Ka band radar. As long as there is other traffic on the highway, you have a high probability of getting an advanced warning. This past weekend going from Calgary to Medicine Hat and back, I was in a huge rush to go down and get to see someone in the hospital in life-threatening condition... doing about 160km the whole way.... my V1 detector saved me from 2 tickets, I had more than adequate warning of the speed traps.

In the cities (and the sometimes the Sheriffs on the highways), lidar guns have replaced radar. For these, the radar detector will seldomly give advance warning. For these you need a laser jammer. A laser jammer gives you warning that you are being targeted by a laser gun. It prevents the lidar gun from getting a lock on you. Typical use is, you are hit by lidar, get the alert, if you're over speed, slow down, turn the jammer off so the nice officer can get his reading. I can also confirm laser jammers work very well.

Both devices are legal in BC.

So, for highway driving, a radar detector is the device you need. A laser jammer won't help much. For city driving, laser jammer is the way to go. Get both for total coverage.

I also know you can buy a Radar Detector/Laser Jammer as a combo. I bought mine on eBay for half what they were selling for in Calgary at the time. No problems, no tickets and lots of warning. Mine even tells you what kind of detector they are using.

Jammers are Illegal but the one that I have looks just like a regular detector. nothing fancy looking and its great. I actually was running late to work one day and watch a State trooper smack his laser gun and retried to get me but it was too late. It is great.

But I only go about 7-8 mph over the speed limit I dont go 15-20 mph over limit.

Laser jammers are not illegal to use in Alberta. Perhaps in your state they are illegal, what state are you in?
