If this is not a MASSIVE failure by the Liberals, I don't know what is. In the last election, the CPC apparently won on a protest vote against corruption.

Hello....

They have significantly improved their seat count, and have come just short of a majority, even with the "Evil Harper" crap still floating out there.

Even the bloody NDP has gained seats at the cost of the Liberals.

Now they will have to run another leadership convention... but with what money? As far as I know, they haven't paid off the last one. And coupled with the drop in popular vote, they will have less money to run another election. You really think they will trigger an election soon? Of course not.

Nor will the Bloc or NDP, who will be happy with their results.

So for everyone thinking that Harper did wrong by calling this election, you are incorrect. He has a NEW mandate, and the likelihood that anyone will challenge that in the next two years is off their rocker.

It also shows that Canada is warming up to him. Trust is earned. It takes time.

To be fair, it's a stupid question, and I can understand why Dion didn't get it.

If you were prime minister right now, what would you have done (in the past)?

You mean if I was prime minister two years ago?

No, if you were minister right now. What would you have done (in the past)?

It's a dumb question. If I was the CEO of my company right now, I wouldn't have done anything differently in the past, because this hypothetical situation doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Weird.

The guy's a terrible communicator, sure, but this video is ridiculous and completely irrelevant to anything. This kind of crap makes the media in the last days before an election? Weak.

Nice post Shawnski. This is a very big victory for the CPC, in my opinion.

It's a perfectly valid question IMO, to ask what you would have done differently.. especially if the person being asked the question has spent any time criticizing how things have been done!

"How would you have done things differently?"

"Well first I'd have kept the GST where it was and put the extra $$ into green initiatives, I wouldn't have changed the tax rules for trust companies, blah blah blah"

EDIT: Doubly so in the context of the economic meltdown.. i.e. how would have Dion handled it differently than Harper to better protect Canada?

EDIT2: It's a softball question even! Giving Dion a chance to make up stuff that could have done better.

I would agree, except that when Dion asked for clarification ("You mean if I was PM 2 years ago???) the interviewer said no. So I was confused too. I guess I'm kind of a moron too.

How is that CBC can have 20 people sitting around an election desk but couldn't pony up the money for the hockey song!

Rahim Jaffer is still in trouble in Edmonton...only about 300 votes separating him and the NDP, with the dippers closing in.

An excellent question, especially as they aren't making any money off this deluxe coverage as there aren't any commercials.

I'm actually quite happy with another minority government - I think one of the big problems in Canadian politics is that the PM has too much power with a majority, and essentially can do anything he/she wants with little oversight.

What would be really nice would be for the Conservatives to enlist the Liberals in a coalition; that would give a majority of Canadians (that voted) a voice in what the government does. It would also marginalize the Bloc and perhaps drain some of their support away to the national parties, which cannot be seen as other than a good thing. However, I don't know if Harper has the humility to try it, which is too bad as it would be very hard for Dion to reject such an overture.
