It's a bylaw. If you own a dog you need to be familiar with the bylaws affecting ownership of a dog. You also need to OBEY the bylaws......crazy I know.
I guess I just don't agree with the bylaw then. I am not saying we should stop following laws, it was just a crappy ticket to get.

Are you telling me you wouldn't be pissed if this happened to you? you are walking back to your car that is parked at a meter and you know you have about 30s left. From a distance you see a meter maid waiting at the meter for it to expire, you are 10 steps away when it expires and they start writing a ticket. They are doing their job.

What about if you start crossing the street after the hand starts flashing and you are just about to step onto the sidewalk when the light turns green. Technically you could get a ticket for that too, would you give the by-law officer a handshake and thank him for looking out for the greater good?

Yes, it is not allowed to have your dog off-leash unless it is not an off-leash area. I am not disputing that, if I did that wasn't my intention, I just think that a warning might have been sufficient in this case. I know ignorance is no excuse.

Thanks, you bring the best out of me. I love you too. How is the bylaw officer going to know a warning will work for you? He's probably given quite a few out only to see the offender do it again. What name did I call you?

wow I can't believe all the "perfect" people on here. if there is no one around and he's not bugging anyone who cares? If he wasnt picking up after his dog then fine but seriously playing in an empty park with no one around.

Can't you see though, he is hurting people because of his irresponsibility in not knowing and following all city bylaws. I am incredibly offended by the ignorance of dog owners. I mean, some kids are afraid of dogs, we should just ban them imo.

I have no people running around with their dog just don't start a thread complaining about it when you get in trouble for breaking a bylaw

Why not? An internet forum is a perfect place to vent that frustration.

Why is it always "perfect" for law abiding citizens. It just annoys me to all end when someone labels me like that. Yes, I won't signal sometimes when switching lanes boo frickity hoo. But when it comes to this SINGLE bylaw that we are discussing here, then yes, label me perfect... but don't label me perfect when it comes to other things. Being ignorant of the law or trying to stray from being perfect doesn't give you the right to ignore a bylaw.

It's not really the fact that people sometimes ignore the laws that gets me... it's when they complain about it after the fact when they are in the wrong that irks me.

Say his dog is a good distance from him, perhaps fetching a frisbee or stick he just threw. Now let's say a kid wanders into the park edge, perhaps making lot's of a noise which attracts said dog. Owner of dog didn't take dog to obedience school quite yet, so dog naturally will go check out the kid. Kid get's frightened and perhaps the dog feeds off that and bites.

It's happened. Moreso if you don't include the bite. It doesn't take much and this is why the bylaw is there, especially around parks.

I have a park 1/2 block from my house, there is a community hall with a large field behind it that is used as an outdoor rink in winter, otherwise nothing goes on there. I still can't take my dog there, and have to drive to the off leash park which is the size of a postage stamp with 50+ dogs there every day. This annoys me to no end, and I have occasionally ended up taking him to the "no dog zone" for a play at the end of the day, so far no one has complained or busted me. As for the bylaw officers, our new neighbour, who rents the house next door, has managed to accumulate a very impressive pile of garbage in his yard since June, and despite my calls to the city, nothing has been done. This guy has threatened my husband, and nailed blue plastic sheeting to our fence so we can't "see" him. Which is the bigger problem to the city? Dogs playing ball or some psycho who collects garbage and threatens people?? Sorry for the rant as my first post, had to get it off my chest.

I am not saying that, I am saying that my response would have been similar to his.

But I am one of those d-bags that will tell someone to fight a speeding ticket, although it is not as useful anymore as you can't just plead guilty as the registered owner...

There is just some people that seem to be ready to lynch this guy because *GASP* he had the audacity to take his dog off a leash in an area that was CLEARLY not intended for that purpose.

While I regret that a responsible dog owner has been fined, i am glad to know that there is enforcement of that area.

As a local resident (prestwick manor representing) who coached timbit soccer last spring, it was difficult to find an 'unsoiled' area large enough to spread out a blanket while playing at that field.

this happened to me before with the damn ParkPlus system, I just count it as me being unlucky. The next time I made sure to put an extra 5 minutes in to leave me enough time to get back.

I cheaped out on 50 cents and got pwned by a $40 ticket, so now I don't do it anymore. What's so hard to understand about that? I'm sure I'm not the only one who had a parking ticket before because of cheaping out on a couple bucks.

Not yet, but I will and I am going to have dogs AND I will probably let them off their leashes in areas that are not zoned for such a thing. I also plan on not picking up after them, I will probably drop trow and plant one right beside theirs.

I'm sure I'd be irked too...but moreso at myself for not knowing the bylaws than at the bylaw officer himself. Hell I'm not saying lynch the guy...just don't defend him when he doesn't know the bylaws of the city and is trying to make himself look like the innocent person in all this.

everyone keeps using the what ifs, it didnt happen, there was no one around. No harm, no foul.
why not just let him go with a warning since there was no one around. Why don't they try to educate people about the bylaws? Send stuff out with renewals of licenses or when they sign up for a licence. I have never recieved anything from the city regarding that.

And that didn't upset you in the slighest? You are a bigger person than me. What if someone had shown you leniency? Would a warning have been sufficient in making sure that you now put the extra 50 cents in or did you need the fine?
