So, my counter tops really piss me off. They stain/keep marks so easily. I find I'm wiping them three times a day. Cup of coffee, brown ring, water - slightly discoloured mark, juice - mark, food - mark. They're this off white colour and probably so old that maybe they've been stripped of whatever was on the surface? I don't know.

Anyway, not interested in new counter tops yet. that'll be a few years down the road. In the meantime in there anything I can get that would be like a semi-permanent counter top mat? Or cover? Or something that would wipe easy? Look okay?

ooops I couldnt find your thread!!! I think photon had a similar one?? Is your counter like a worn-out laminate or something else?

I own a condo I rent out with all kinds of cut marks in the arbirite (sp?). If there was an easy way to cover this without replacing the counters completely, I'd be very interested.

I heard a mixture of cat urine and oatmeal works very well as an organic alternative.

your mistake is in the oatmeal. you'd get better results with farina or cream of wheat.

Buy some laminate and glue it on using contact cement.

Leave it on for at least 2 weeks to ferment and properly stick to the laminate. Make sure to massage it least once a day with your bare hands!

Yeah, it's kinda a laminate I guess, whatever that means? It's standard old school 80's counter.

$20 bucks for a quote too, that's not bad.

Although then my cabinets will look pretty scruffy.. Hmm... almost a slippery slope I don't want to get started on! Next I'll need paint... then floor... then my kitchen looks funny compared to the living/dining room. dammit.

There is a paint that does this as well, I think it is available at home hardware but I don't remember for sure.

Yeah there are several brands that do the faux-stone stuff besides Krylon spray paint. I guess the main thing would be prepping the countertop suffficiently.

For about 50 bucks a sheet you can get laminate at home deopt so for less then 100 bucks you can put on new laminate. All you need to cut it is to score it close to the right size with an exacto knife and it just breaks along the line you cut. Then glue it on the counter top with water based contact cement. Then you need a router with a laminate bit and it trims it flush with the old countertop.

I did it to my old house only took a day and turned out really good. I was impressed with houw easy it was. I also painted down the cupboards and put new handles on them. For about $200 it looked like a brand new kitchen.

Yeah they.ve got directions for that at doityourself.com too. And that would last longer than the paint..I guess the router thing is what intimidated me
