MTV Europe music awards got Rickrolled
This is bound to be fata, but Rick Astley has been nominated in category "Best act ever", by MTVEMA. Other nominees include Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day, Tokio Hotel and U2. There was a prevote in which you could fill in your own nominee.
Looking at that list he would win just without any internet phenomena. Come on... Tokio hotel , U2 or Britney Spears as "Best act ever"... MTV couldn't get any lower.

Corporate music is a joke. Thankfully, the worse it gets, the better the real storytellers get. There is so much good music being made right now, that I just completely ignore what the Big 5 labels are doing.

How can they even have a category 'best act ever'? How the heck would you define or judge something like that.
But I've been largely ignoring commercial music for a long time now and basically out of the pop (depending on how you define 'pop') loop. I'm a happier person for it.

I would love to say that i hate corporate music and never listen to it, but that is not the case.
But I don't listen practically any music made after 1990 (Painkiller was released), but almost all of the music I listen that are made before that are "commercial music". Thin Lizzy, Asia, Priest, Maiden, Finnish Classics, Sabbath, Beatles, Queen, Blue murder, Kristoffersson, Cash etc. So who knows, maybe after 20 years someone says that "I don't listen to commercial bands at all, just Britney Spears"

The thing is, the Beatles was popular music too. And so were the Beach Boys, Queen and a whole other bunch of great "acts". Good music used to be what commerce liked, it's just that the standards have totally fallen off.

I think different marketing mechanisms are being used now as opposed to 10,20, or 30 years ago. Commercial music now is simply manufactured culture instead of communicated culture.

Bingo. Guys like Sam Phillips and others later on, it could be argued had a genuine ear for good music and that accounts for their legendary successes.
Maiden may be "mainstream" but no one can deny the quality of their artisanship.
Today... it just sucks. I don't know. I blame it on the 80s and MTV. Seriously, video DID kill the radio star.

Hmm.. Maybe I should have used somkind of "smiley" at the end of the last sentence like you young bucks are using (one/year is my limit)... I meant the last sentence as Sarcasm, but 90 % of time my messages keep being un-understood, whether they are spoken or written, and this damned language called as English doesn't help a bit.

So lame. Judge music by the music, not by how many people like it or which labels represent it.

Indy doesn't have much to do with it. I freaking love a lot of ALT-country. Something you won't find on any of the big labels with a few exceptions, but the style and substance of this genre is anything but snobby. It just kicks a lot of ass and is totally open about what it is and what stories it is trying to tell.

Yeah I love a lot of indie music too. I'm just not one of those tools that'll throw out all their CDs as soon as they hear the band on the radio.

It was an internet forum that had the idea to write him in as a nominee. It spread across the internet, and worked. It's not because he's actually good.
That being said, based on the competition he's up against, he really shouldn't have a hard time winning the actual award. Madonna, Britney Spears, Green Day, U2, Tokio Hotel? Come on, are any of those ACTUALLY better than Rick Astley?

It's so subjective but..... yes. Each one of those 'acts' are better than Rick Astley.
/honestly can't understand the U2 hating going on in here....
