Calgary police officer... killed in RCMP jurisdiction (Since I don't think CPS goes out in to Langdon)
 My condolences to the family.

Just heard this on the radio but I thought they said a Calgary Police Officer was involved in a shooting in Langdon but did not specify if it was the officer that was killed or someone else.

Suicides never make the news, why is this one different?

As a general rule, the media does not report suicides... although once in a while, they do make it in the news.

There was mention before about suicides not making the news; generally it's to not give the person their 15 minutes of fame. Not sure if it has an effect or not.
This may have made the news as it may have been news previously of "officer killed" before the cause of death was determined.

Quite shocked to see this make the news to be honest. This hits quite close to home to me due to work and it still baffles me how the media picks which stories to run.

Usually the only way a suicide makes the news is if the media starts reporting on it and then later finds out it was a suicide. ie There was one in Fish creek park last year, where the media made a big deal about a body being found near St. Mary's college in a wooded area. The first day there was a huge article because foul play was suspected, then the next day there was a blurb about 2 x 3 cm on the last page that simply stated that the wounds were found to be self-inflicted. It went from a front page flashy article to a minimal blurb when suicide was found to be involved, and that small blurb wouldn't even had been there if they didn't report on it as a suspicious death the first day.

Yeah, I always wonder how they pick their stories too. It seems once a year the media will latch onto a story about a parking lot brawl involving hockey teams, and then make a big story out of it, making it seem like it was a one of a kind thing to happen. But to my knowledge, post game parking lot brawls happen quite often.

My guess is that the news broke out that a cop was killed with details to follow on cause. If they knew it was a suicide at first, it probably wouldn't be reported.

Just a guess, as suicide is usually not reported.

Yeah its definitely weird. Not to derail the thread, but the best example I have of this is we had a 80 car pile up on Deerfoot near the Calfrobe bridge a few winters ago...I don't even think I saw it on the news the next morning or in the paper.
