Anyone have any insights? Now that the Bold is out, would any of you switch to the Bold if it was an option? Why or why not?

Personally I'm on the iPhone side of things with this battle. Bold is more expensive has less to offer and an 8th of the memory of the 8Gb iPhone.
As for plans. A general misconception is that you have to get a iPhone specific plan. You can get any plan you want and then add on the data for the iPhone, which I always suggest the 6gb for $30 already mentioned here.
Same goes for BB Bold. There are BB specific data packs but I still suggest the 6gb data.

I might give the email suggestion from photon a try.
With the software updates available for the iPhone, I wonder if they could add the feature down the road? The updates seem to be minor (i.e. fixing bugs) and I'm not sure if they would allow for more major updates?

Does jailbreak mean the same thing as to unlock? Is unlocking easy to do? Is it just a matter of removing and replacing the card (if card is the right term)? I will be in the States next month and imagine that I can get a new one at 7-11 or in many places.

no jailbreaking is a little different. I haven't done it, but it essentially gives you access to a different app store full of apps that are not yet sanctioned by apple (or that never will be). They can often times help you get around little annoying things that apple won't let you do.

with the 3g iPhone you cant do this. As of now, you are pretty much locked into the SIM you card you have in your phone, for the provider you are on.
There is no unlock for the 3g iPhone as of now AFAIK.
NOt sure what happens when you replace the SIM card you currently have with a SIM card from another carrier.
Does anyone know?

A friend of mine who is in the computer business says the 3G can be unlocked. I'll be seeing him tomorrow evening and will ask him to clarify.

I think you can buy a simcard mod to unlock the 3g, but there isn't a software unlock yet. From what i remember from engadget/gizmodo, you had to cut your sim card in half and solder it to some thing and insert that into the iphone.

I think the Pwnage or whatever tools used to be able to software unlock the iPhone 3G, but after the first or second update they haven't been able to do it again.

The 2.1 unlock and jailbreak works, it's just not easy to do on Windows yet.

So does that unlock work for the SIM card as well?
So if you go to the states, europe or what ever, you can buy a SIM card from a local carrier and use that one?

Awesome!
There you go then, yes if you buy a local sim card and slap it into your unlocked iPhone it will work. Just make sure your SIM card has data
If you put a different SIM card into a locked iPhone it will reset the lock and you will have to activate your phone again through iTunes.

are you sure? From the dev team's website (people that made quickpwn/pwnage)
It does NOT support the unlocking of iPhone 3G
Currently the tools can jailbreak and unlock first gen iphones but not the 3g iphone.

that's just jailbreaking.
That is different than unlocking.
Jailbreaking just allows you to install apps from cyndia (the "other" app store).
Unlocking in my mind is a SIM card unlock, and not available for the 3G.

yup, what arsenal said.
Your confusing jailbreaking with unlocking.
Jailbreaking allows 3rd party apps (and hacked itunes apps) to be loaded on your iphone.
Unlocking allows your phone to operate accept sim cards from unsupported networks.

To be clear: There is currently no way to "softwarically" (read: safely) unlock a previously locked 3G iPhone.

except a hardware unlock.
http://gizmodo.com/5025249/iphone-3g...m-card-adapter
Although this article is dated July, don't know if 2.0/2.1 firmware stops it. Either way, it's much more sketchy then the software unlocks.
