I wonder what his contract looks like because the way Durant played and with his age you'd think he'd be the future.
Crandell has looked like he and the receivers are never on the same page. That Edm game was easily winnable if Crandell could move the friggin offence.
Wonder why this wasn't part of the original deal with Joseph?

So, how are the Riders who have broken the cap every year it has been in place, going to fit a $300,000 salary on their team???
Isn't that the money Joseph wanted initially anyways?
Stupid Riders!

Yeah they've broken the cap all of the 1 year it has been in place all the while leading the league in injuries by far. Your sensationalism of the topic is really silly. Don't forget MTL broke it by about $120,000 while the Riders broke it by about $50,000 so clearly breaking the cap is a help to your team just look what it did for MTL.
Here's how they'll try to do it and why it is unavoidable at this point that we're going over:
CFL CBA it says that ALL players count in the cap unless they are on the IR which is a minimum of 9 or ten weeks IIRC. This means that since we have 18 injuries only a select few will be exempt from the cap. You can't just replace 12 guys and not go over the cap. The Riders aren't left with a lot of options. What are they going to do start playing their back-up linebackers at receiver because so many of them (receivers) are hurt?
I guarantee the CFL will change this the next time they renew the CBA and implement a baseball style IR with 15 day DL etc.
Second of all it is halfway through the season so they don't pay the full 300,000. Third is that CFL contracts arent' guaranteed so they can release Crandell tomorrow if they want to clear cap space.
Also breaking the cap is totally allowed in the CFL it is just that they penalize you for doing so. It's not like they add asterisks or take away championships. If they wanted to every team in the CFL could break it every year but they likely couldn't afford to do so because of $ constraints.
And I believe Joseph wanted Burris/Printers money which is about $350,000-400,000.

I think the point of it was why didn't they keep Joseph then, rather then trade for the more expensive, lesser talented Bishop

Why was that a dumb comment? He's just trying to figure out how they are going to fit 300k under the cap....
No need to be a Sensitive Suzie about the matter.

Yeah I edited my post it was a little defensive. I was more referring to the fact that he pointed out that we've been over the cap EVERY year when in fact every year is 1.
I guess the bottom line is for the 2nd year in a row Tillman has already publically admitted that we'll be over the cap because it is a flawed system.

This is ironic, as the cap is in place to protect SASK.

Yeah but I think that's more the million $ contracts the argos were giving to "rocket" Ishmail and Doug Flutie. This is more desperation breaking of the cap as I'm sure the Riders wouldn't do it if they didn't have to.
As long as it is broken in order to be able to field a team. Not even just a competitive team but a team. That's how decimated the Riders are right now.

Why do you think Bishop is making 300K per year? How could the Argos afford him at that with guys like Joseph making 350K+ and Bruce 200K+? His contract was heavily front loaded and is not making near that much annually. Riders have 9 guys on the 9 game which doesn't count against the cap and I'd suspect Crandell will be done in Riderville.
That said, unless Bishop can play slot, I'm not sure how this deal makes them any better. Didn't give up much to get him I guess.

I'd say it's more to protect against owners who would spend too much out of their pockets as opposed to supporting their teams through actual football revenue like ticket sales, merch and TV revenue. The owners would dip into their pockets, lose a bunch of cash, bail on the franchise and then leave the CFL in a bind to find somebody to take over a money losing venture. Don't get me wrong, it's the CFL's own fault for letting it happen but it puts them at big risk and hurts parity across the league.

LMAO
Tillman hides healthy players on the IR to carry a bloated roster for the Riders, they are purposely going over the cap.
For proof I refer you to this:

In particular, Justin was stashed on the injured reserve list to start this year in Regina, even though he wasn't hurt. "I had problems with that whole thing (in Regina) just because they were trying to tell people I was injured," he said.
|
And the SMS has been enforced for just 1 year, but has technically been in place for 2... they gave teams 1 year grace to get under it... Sask was over that year, didn't bother to get under, was over again last year and hit with fines, and is looking to be well over again this year.
I can't wait until the Esks, Stamps, Lions, and Argos say "Screw the cap" and then listen to Rider fans whine again.

Ok so they would do it. But I'm not so sure if that isn't just creative managing. The other teams are allowed to do it they just choose not to.
A little unethical sure but like you said all the other teams will say screw the cap to a certain degree. As long as it is less than $100,000 it is a good decision to go over. I don't know how you think the Riders will whine, the cap system prevents HUGE discrepancies between teams spending, Riders are small market they'll always be at a little bit of a disadvantage. Although I belive they were the most profitable team in the CFL last year.

The Riders?
I really doubt it.
They lag behind the entire West in attendance.... almost 9000 a game less than Edmonton.

Wow it took 8 games for the Riders to finally realized that Crandell is a sucky starting QB. Crandell will always be a backup QB. I actually thought at the beginning of the season that the Riders will go after Bishop after they lost Joseph. I just can't believed they waited this long. I guess they thought Crandell will do the job but they found out that he sucked as a starter. When he won the Grey Cup in 2001, it was a fluke and if it wasn't for Boerigter, they would have lost the game. I guess Crandell is one of my least favorite starting QB that dons the Stamps uniform. Anyways, good for the Riders to pick up Bishop.

Tis true actually. IIRC, they put $1.5M - $2M in the bank last year - the Esks profit was under $1M I believe. Attendance is only one piece of the puzzle - Rider merchandise sold is third in the country of all sports. Only the Leafs and Habs sell more merch than the Riders.

With ya on that. Never been a fan of Crandell - very classy guy but just a very average QB. A capable backup really describes him best IMO. I was really surprised when the Stamps signed him to a LT extension after winning the GC in 01. Give him credit though, that 3 game GC run has kept him employed for 7 more years. Rumour has it he's done in Riderville - wasn't at practice today...

Did anyone else watch the Vid on the main page of tsn.ca. It had interviews with Durant and Cates.
Durant looked pretty pissed, although I'm not sure why other than the fact they are friends (he and Crandell). As long as Bishop doesn't go on to have a career year Durant is the starter when he comes back IMO.
Cates sounded like he was disappointed but realized that it is necessary to shake things up after 2 losses where the offense looked pathetic.

He is pissed because everyone will expect Bishop to be the new starting QB for the Riders. With Crandell in, Durant will have a better job in getting the starting job compare to having Bishop in.

I believe that might simply be some creative financing on the part of the Eskimos... but I been wrong before.
