			Holy hell. Its hideous.

The only thing that would make that kid uglier would be an Oilers jersey.

Talk about a non-issue. It's a show for crying out loud. Is everyone also pissed that that guy who lit the torch was actually supported by ropes, and wasn't really floating in the air?

Digital fireworks and an ugly kid are a non issue. Giving China a break is an issue. Thats why China wanted the games all along, to appear in a better light so people would forget its true colors (and become tired of people and media pointing out said true colors).

I dont care how many breathtaking ceremomies they organise to cover up the circus they are running there, what is happening in that country is a travesty and at no times they should be getting a break.

Seems pretty real to me, we really do have Western hospitality.

Agreed. I haven't watched these Olympics and I have no intention of watching. It's a sickening propaganda display put upon by one of the world's worst regimes, and the sad thing is, most people are going along with it.

Until the Chinese gov't apologizes for Mao, for Tianamen Square, for Tibet, and for the many other crimes they are guilty of, any so-called "progress" they are making towards freedom is a sham. It doesn't surprise me at all that they "enhanced" the opening ceremonies with special effects - the whole image of the place is nothing more than special effects to begin with.

Good job, way to punish all of the athletes involved in the games because of your views of the country that is holding them.

TBQH, I think a political reason for not watching the games is worse than not caring. The olympics are not supposed to be a soap box for every hippy out there to tell the world the evils of China. It is the one time that people are supposed to put that aside and celebrate amateur (for the most part) athletics.

Please have a look at Olympic Games history, the summer games are very political and very little of it is amateur. The winter games are less political because they are smaller, but they also allow professionals. You'd have to go way back to the 1960 Rome Olympics to find an Olympics that was mostly amateur. Make no mistake about it, the Chinese athletes make a living from their sport and most of the other sports are professional, even something obscure to north americans like fencing is very professional.

Its nice to watch the olympics because of the passion of the competitors and seeing the best in the world compete, however, lets not have any illusions about it being a utopian celebration of amateur sports. In fact the scandals, politics and the bad stuff are also a part of what makes the games so interesting.

We did but we were scammed. All they had was some second rate lake.

It is the one time that people are supposed to put that aside and celebrate amateur (for the most part) athletics.

You must have the Olympics confused with some other sporting event. It hasn't been about celebrating amateur sport for a few decades now.

It is now a ersatz war game where the "winning" country is the one that gets the most medals, and where the host country spends untold billions of dollars trying to outdo the previous host country in gaudy show business numbers that would fit in perfectly in Las Vegas. It has also been politicized since the West boycotted Moscow in 1980 and the Soviet Bloc boycotted LA in 1984.

You might as well worry about the virginity of a crack ho as the sanctity of the Olympics.

You know, I think I might just not bother with arguing these kinds of points, but just include a LINK which explains the particular fallacy in question. And note that also THIS LINK points to another logical error in this statement.
