Just got back from the hospital. The oncologist wrote us a letter about our situation and said my father needed a bed so we're taking that to the store on McLeod Trail and getting a bed. Thanks everyone for all the help.

Oh good, I'm glad you got a letter for dad (I think mom mentioned that to me earlier) ...and I'm so thankful for everyone on this thread who made their suggestions. Thanks so much.

I lost mine three weeks ago to bone marrow cancer. Of course, very little could be done to make him comfortable given his condition.

Probably why I haven't been around much lately.

Sorry, didn't mean to derail the thread. I guess when it comes to loved ones you try to do everything within your power to alleviate any suffering. When my dad went to palliative care, I was able to sneak some cold beers in for him. Of course sipping through a straw is hardly wetting one's whistle, but I could tell he enjoyed it.

You didn't derail the thread at all. You're more then welcome to post stories about your father on here. I'm sure that something as small as that meant a lot to him. Knowing his son cared and did something for him in his last days......well i'm sure that brought a smile to his face and nice thoughts in his mind of the family he has.

And yeah I agree with your statement. My dad has a tough time eating solid foods after 30 radiation treatments/4 chemo cycles so I try to whip up new creations for liquid drinks etc. I've done all kinds of milkshakes, etc.

If anyone has any other recipes, feel free to give me more suggestions!

Reggie...I am sooo sorry to hear about your dad. I can't imagine what you are going through right now. If you ever need to talk or just say anything..this forum is a good place.
You didn't derail the thread at all...I started this thread because my dad has cancer and I needed help. So if you need to talk at all....please use this thread as a venue to talk about anything....it's so nice how everyone on CP can be there for each other.

I think when people reach a certain point in their condition it's just about them being comfortable and happy...I can see how getting some beer (which they probably haven't had in a while) would make someone very happy.

Neil/Oilfan81....I know it's hard for dad to eat right now. I am SO thankful that you r there to help him and help mom come up with new liquid foods that he can eat. I think I suggested mashed potatoes to him earlier. Did he eat any?

I hate distance, I wish I could just be there all the time, but again, I am so thankful that you are there lil bro, it means so much to dad to spend time with you.

Yea, it's cool. They know they're on the verge and they just want to feel half-assed normal. My grandfather was on his death bed about a year and a half ago and I made the trek to visit him. Everyone was dancing around the topic and (I certainly mean no offense to my family) talking to him like a child. He could barely communicate, but if you looked in his eyes you could tell he was lucid. So I started telling him jokes and commenting on the attractiveness of the nurses.

Most people will never hear a 77 y/o man laugh through a hole in his throat and have fond memories, but man oh man, me and the old bugger had a hell of a time that day.

Good job, Reg. I kinda wish I had thought of that. My grandfather would have probably traded his IV for a cold beer if someone offered.

hey Reg, sorry about your loss.

As for beds and such, one of my summer jobs was delivering home medical supplies. The Alberta Aids to Daily living has a neat catalogue of stuff they will pay for, but like everything in life, there is always a Mercedes Benz for every Ford Taurus. Try a couple of home health stores and guaranteed you will find something that can help out your dad. It may cost a bit of money, but at this point, the extra bucks are worth it.

Lost mine in 2000 to Colon Cancer. Like you i used to sneak in a small bottle of his favourite gin along with some tonic. The nurses caught me once and objected but i asked them why should it matter if he has less than a week to live.

You're doing a great job Oilfan. Just hope things work out okay for your dad.

I'll ask my mother to see if she has any special recipies she made for my father when he was dying.
