Default We are NOT so Different: Coast to coast Canadians share the same views

We're Not so different are we?

Multiculturalism is more and more an Elitist driven concept.

Contrary to the theory that Canada is a county made up of ethnic minorities who define themselves as different and who wish to remain so, newcomers on average ranked official multiculturalism as Canada's 19th defining attribute, only three places ahead of the 16th-place status assigned to it by the general population, and well behind such all-Canadian symbols as Wayne Gretzky, Niagara Falls and the Mounties.

In other words, first-generation immigrants overwhelmingly define what it means to be Canadian in terms of what they share in common with other Canadians --as opposed to government policies that accentuate differences between newcomers and longer-settled groups.

Interesting list. Nice to see Pierre Berton (fellow alumnus of Monterey Elementary in Oak Bay, BC) on the list. And the city of Victoria right behind him!

I would have thought the RCMP and hockey would be right behind the maple leaf.

i don't know why, but it bothers me that a person who isn't Canadian, who has rarely ever visited Canada, who has no real power or influence in Canada, and is a meaningless figurehead is ranked #3

i've never liked the monarchy and it has always annoyed me that the queen is on our money. couldn't we find some real Canadian historical figure to put on our $20 bills, someone who actually matters?

That's pretty incredible actually. You will hear lefty anti-Calgary west coasters cite the Stampede (among other things) as an example of how Calgary is such an American city. It's good that the mainstream of Canada doesn't think so.

It's more than the person though. It's more than the monarchy, IMO. It's the way we claimed our independance without war and the way we kept our heritage in doing so. That's what she represents to us. But again, that's just my opinion.

That list is of the online voting for the thing that people think should be #1.

This is the original full poll: http://www.101things.ca/101ThingsJune30.pdf

The Stampede finished a respectable #26 - right between the Stanley Cup and Celene Dion (and well ahead of Tim Hortons at #58).

I'm reminded of the immortal punk band, the Queen Haters from SCTV:

Martin Short is the stereotypical, yet convincing, punk lead singer. Andrea Martin and Eugene Levy are on backup vocals. John Candy played the blank-faced bald drummer, while Joe Flaherty tries to keep up on guitar. This tune has been covered - there was a version by Mudhoney on a tribute to Canadian punk disc that was much slower and nowhere near as fun.

I've always had a dream
I'd like to meet the Queen
I'd like to punch her in the face
Yeah, that would make me laugh

I'd love to kick her in the face
And then I'd make a picture of it
In lovely Ekta chrome
And then I'd give it to the Prince

I hate the bloody Queen
She makes me go to school
I hate the bloody Queen
And all her bloody rules

I'd like to drown the Queen
Off the coast of Argentine
Throw her off a battle ship
With her Faulklands war machine

She taxes me to death
I can't afford me dope
I'd like to get her high
Yeah, that would make me laugh
Ha, ha, ha, ha

I hate the bloody Queen
She makes me go to school
I hate the bloody Queen
And all her bloody rules

I hate the bloody Queen
I hate the bloody Queen
I hate the bloody Queen
I hate the bloody Queen

I feel sorry for you Lady Di
Having a mother-in-law like that
