I'm pretty sure there is something like 41 grams of sugar in one can of pepsi. That's .41kg or nearly one pound of sugar per day you are consuming. That is unbelievable.

Red Bull is pretty bad too. That is why I laugh when I see people drinking it before working out.

Yep, recent studies have demonstrated that coffee actually has some pretty significant health benefits. The caveat being of course that we're talking about pretty much black coffee, not those Starbucks calorie-laden ones!

As for weight loss, just a couple of years ago I started putting on weight for the first time ever. I've found that understanding how many calories your body actually needs, and controlling caloric intake (especially portion control) is key, along with regular exercise.

Keep track of how many calories you're taking for a few days - you'll probably be amazed how much you're actually consuming. Ditching (or cutting back significantly on) the pop is a bit of a no-brainer.

Sadly for me, it was beer consumption that had to be cut back. |

Well, I'm sure most people in this thread and on this forum don't work 11 hours/day. It's a lot easier to make time for exercise when you're working a typical work week.

One little thing that helped me was measuring out what I was eating, in particular, dressings and condiments. Instead of assuming that the 30 calories per serving of salad dressing applied no matter how much I poured on my salad, I would measure out a tablespoon and leave it at that. Same if I had a sandwich, I would measure out the mayo. If I had cereal, measured it out. It gets annoying, i'll admit that, but it's really helped me control calories and portion sizes.
As for pop, I used to be really bad and drank a lot of pop. To try and balance it out, I would drink a bottle of water for every can of pop I had. I eventually just started cutting out pop entirely and I leave pop for the few times I eat out.

You're right, that is completely not believable...lol

I think your math is a little off there...
41 grams is 0.041 kg, or 0.1 pounds (approx).

Still not good for you but not nearly as dire as drinking 1 pound of sugar.

does a can of Pepsi even weigh 1lb ?

Sorry, meant to say 41g x 10 cans per day = .41kg or nearly 1lb of sugar per day since he said he drinks 8-10 cans per day.

Well I have cut back to two cans of pop a day. Quit smoking? Let's not get crazy here, I am not ready for that step, lol. Still doing the long walks though and switched from taking cream in my coffe at Timmies to milk. It's a start. Also, I bought some mini carrots to snack on as opposed to the good ol potato chips.

Congrats! it's a good start.

I just quit smoking myself, pretty rough at first but not so bad overall. I went cold turkey with no crutch. I did spend a lot of time in front of a punching bad, though, so maybe i had one crutch...lol.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but drink lots of water if you can, it will speed up your metabolism

EDIT - i see it has been mentioned several times..lol, but it's important so i'll leave my post as it was

I don't want to hijack the topic, but I just heard that X-Weighted is casting families at the Talisman Centre today and tomorrow. Anyone going to audition?

I wish it was 11 a day. Unfortunately I'm working 6 days a week. By the time Sunday gets around I'm not interested in doing much.

Is there a good way to measure how many calories and carbs your body needs in a day?

BMR rate should tell you how many calories you need. Don't take it for truth though. You have to experiment a bit to find out EXACTLY how much you need.

Carbs? Different for everyone. Just eat good carbs, and you won't have a problem.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about losing weight since I'm pretty comfortable with where I am at. I've just always had a bigger frame and lower metabolism so it'd be nice to keep it off.

I think everyone should lift weights.

Seriously.

The benefits are immense. And for someone that is only looking to maintain, you already have a headstart on all those people who have to cut first.
