At the Winnipeg zoo they have a magpie exhibit.
Magpies in cages. I kid you not.

Magpies are protected, I know this because I was adopted and raised by a nice couple of Magpies. One night my father drank to much, smacked my mom, who then called the cops. My dad did not go to jail, why....because he was protected....

			*bump*
because these useless POS birds are driving me ######ing CRAZY this morning. They're sitting on the fence squawking at my dog, flying around a tree, squawking at each other, and generally pissing me off. This started at 6AM.

Can I shoot these effin things? I have a paintball gun, and I think it would be kind of funny to paint a few of these bastids pink.

I was at Heritage Park a couple of years ago, and a guy asked me to identify a "beautiful bird."
Imagine my mirth when I told him, a visitor from out east, that the bird in question was an urban blight.

My wife and I have to make sure we bring the dogfood in at night or there's nothing but squawking and bitching from the little buggers at first light as they squabble over kibble.

On the bright side, they're sure good at cleaning up roadkill.

That is awesome! How did I miss hearing about this?

I love how the CBC story says that "A family is recovering from shock after witnessing a lioness kill a trained golden eagle at the Greater Vancouver Zoo." I would have totally rocked to see this live in person... high fives and everything.

BTW, what kind of pansy eagle is afraid of a few crows. Typical Vancouver!

Well if it makes anyone feel better my contribution was hitting two magpies in mid-flight with my car outside the city. Looked just like a movie where the guy would get hit and roll up the front window and then fly off the back.. except it was magpies.

I'll give another +1 to this. Especially magpies and crows. They have been having a turf war outside my house. Real fun at 4:00 AM... |

We have no magpies down here, but do have the flying rats known as pigeons. Several, several years ago, while living in Michigan, I hit a pigeon with my car. It was lodged under my hood, as though it was a macabre hood ornament.

Then there's that one comment about the guy 'Paul' and the talking birds. Is that a joke?

I tried to when I was about 9. My grandma was going to give me a quarter for every magpie I 'caught' stealing out of her garden.
My youthful enthusiasm soon replaced 'magpie' with 'bird'

Needless to say, my grandma was not impressed when I showed her the 20 or so birds I'd killed in her garden (or near it) which included 1 magpie. Bye bye brand new BB gun. I can't even imagine doing something like that now.

There's no doubt in my mind that these things are intelligent, but that's what makes them so bloody annoying. They sit out of reach of my dog squawking at him, and as soon as I walk out the door they all take off.

That's all I heard this morning......squawking, barking, squawking, barking

Great story.

You should've seen my sister beat the snot out of my brother when he pegged off a barn swallow with his Daisy air rifle at my grandparents' farm back in the day.

It was a bloodbath.

You can probably buy these for cheap, but they should be effective against your magpie problem

Our neighbours put out dog kibble for them to eat...wtf. I know Kensington is bit more animal loverish than other neighbourhoods, but still.
There are dozens of them around.
