Ah yes, I remember the days when you just knew a number starting with 4 was Edmonton, 2 was Calgary, 8 was usually various small towns. I don't remember being able to omit the 2 at the front of numbers though I was alive at the time. My Mom has lived in the same house since it was built 31 years ago, and still has the same phone number with the 'stereotypical' prefix for the area. We got our phone 4 years ago or so ... and it starts with a 2. Lucky ... none of these stupid new-fangled sets of digits.

I'm sticking with 7. Telus can go 10 digit themselves.
Can't wait to reprogram my phone and add the area code to my address books. Thanks Telus!

Not only that but the late 80's and early 90's you knew by the first 3 digits what part of the city they were in....291 ,285, 292 were in the NE...273,272 were Forest Lawn/Dover...274 was like Huntington...going of memory here is it may not be correct...252 was like Southwood...238 Canyon Meadows

Actually, we have a saying where I work. "I blame Telus." Doesn't really matter if it is Telus' fault either. "Coffee machine's broken." "I blame Telus."
As far as ten digit dialing goes, I already know two people that want to stab that phone voice in the face. That alone is going to get people in the habit of dialing the area code in a hurry.

The phones in our office won't let us dial ten digits. You have to dial 9 to get an outside line. 9-1-403-555-1234 works. 9-403-555-1234 doesn't. Lame. Unless and until that's fixed (fingers crossed the phone provider actually comes up with a fix for this) I have to listen to two or three rings and then the stupid area code warning every time I call someone locally.

Congratulations! Someone gets it!
Next time I'll use the sarcasm UBB tags for you Shawnski.
[I know it's not the fault of Telus but they suck at most things so I am placing blame on them for something they didn't do by which I am stating the opposite of an intended meaning especially in order to sneeringly, slyly, jest or mock a person, situation or thing]

274 & 275 were Beddington, Huntington and Sandstone, then they added 295 (I think). I moved before it got crazy.
The 10 digit dialing is no big deal once you get used to it, but like someone said earlier, that messgae when dialing will piss you off until you finally learn.

I must have dialed a 7 digit number about 10 times today ... if I ever meet the voice that gives me the 10-digit talking to, she's gonna get a hurt real bad.

You just need someone to configure your PBX properly.

Hmm... I've dialled 7-digit numbers from my work phone and my cell phone in the last few minutes. And I have yet to get the annoying woman.
I feel neglected.

Shouldn't be that big of an issue. Depending on the model they'll probably just install a patch.

Has anyone yet mentioned the Seinfeld where they introduce a new area code and Elaine gets a new number with the new area code. She then meets a guy who, upon finding out he'll have to dial a different area code for her, throws out her number while she's standing there?
Yeah, I am not making any new friends or getting #s from women who have the new area code. At least not for a couple of years when it is common.
