It's the exact same principle with "carbon offsets." The organizations that offer these things uses the money given to them to fund projects that reduce carbon in our atmosphere either through cleaner energy proposals (Wind, Tidal, etc.), planting trees in South America, etc. Where the whole thing falls apart in my opinion is that these projects are not taken to task to ensure that the money is spent wisely (Ie not going into the hands of some corrupt government official in a third world country) or that said projects even reduce carbon by the amount that the purchaser of such an offset would need to actually offset the activities that they purchased the offset for.
.... or that said company doesn't take a significant 'cut' for 'administrative purposes'...

The hate for guys like Gore and Suzuki is kind of confusing.

I mean, shouldn't us Alberta capitalists actually admire these guys?

They are living the dream, taking millions off hippy suckers.

Who cares if they go mountains of coal to accomodate their lavish lifestyles? What's the harm in that?

I would guess the hatred stems partially from perceived hypocrisy and fraud, but mainly from attempted coercion and conservative radio.

You can't see the hypocracy? The guy tells everyone to use less energy yet he uses copious amounts of energy. Sho what he has bought from "GREEN" sources. Do you thing that those materials that produce the green energy did not cost a lot in enrgy to make? Solar panels need a lot of silcon and then they need to be manufactured. CF lights use dangerous heavy metals that need to be mined and processed and then recycled once they are used. Re-furbishing his house with all new products and materials is energy intensive.

So he uses all this energy for what??? TO have a big house?

Maybe the guy should just have a smalelr house and create a smaller footprint just like he preaches to the rest of the people in this world.

Since my family farms, do I get credit for having a carbon sink? Can I burn gasoline like it has gone out of style beacause my carbon foot print would be neutral?

Apparently Gore gets his power from Nashville Electric's Green Power Switch
Quote:
What is green power? Green power is electricity generated from clean, renewable resources such as solar, wind and methane gas.
So if he is getting all of his power from zero emission sources, why does it matter how much he uses?

I think he has a big staff and a lot of security. He was the Vice-President after all so I would assume he has 24 hour guards.

I'm not here to defend Al Gore's lifestyle because I (like the rest of us) don't really know anything about it. It's pretty obvious and easily explained that he's not your average person living in Douglasdale and sucking down gigawatts of electricity to run his garage door opener.

Yes. If he uses less then there is more 'zero emission source' electricity for everyone else to use.

Not to mention, the more he uses, the more infrastructure needs to be built to provide supply. That isn't energy neurtal.

Oh sure, we all get it. Should he practice what he preaches? Sure.

Has his net effect on the environment been largely positive? IMO, I don't think there is any doubt about that, even if many of us disagree with his arguments on climate change.

Let's say Al Gore caused $100 M to be donated to lung cancer research. Then, you find out that he smokes. Are you still going to lord that over him? Is that a fair analogy?

People who smoke don't go out and 'kill' someone. Or take the chance that they might kill someone.

Driving gas-guzzling SUVs when you really don't have too is supposedly going to kill off the planet....someday.

he isn't. He is getting electricity from the power pool. Where all electricity that is generated goes. Be it from natural, renewable resources, or more traditional sources.

Nashville power would then charge him an extra $4 / 150 kWhs of usage.

Where it gets tricky, is then Nashville power then has to purchase the amount of electricity that Gore used from green sources, and put that in the power pool.

The ONLY way at this point in time for you to use 100% green electricity is to be off the grid and generate your own power through green sources.

So every other post is about how Gore has found ways to decrease how much energy he uses and how big his footprint is and then every post after it is saying how he is still a hypocrite.

*sigh*

I will agree that he has atleast got everyone talking about the environment which is a good think, however, he hypocracy and possible misrepresentation of the facts haven't helped anyone.

I think there is a big difference here. If he just donated a $100 M to lung cancer research but still smokes, does not make him a hypocrit. He is simply trying to help find a cure which one day he will most liekly need.

If he goes on to say that everyone who smokes is a complete moron and it is everyones duty not to smoke, then he is a hyprocrit and should be jumped on.

The problem I see is that he has used more energy than he needs to by a lot, while chastising others for energy consumption.

Because wind power is responsible for the deaths of large numbers of birds.

Why does Gore hate animals?
