Ooo.. Snake of a pick! Was going to finally take them right after you. Ah well. Also: they don't qualify for the UK category as they are Australian... So I'm guessing you'd want to move them into the World category.

My pick will be up in short order.

I don't know, I just figured since most articles written about them has referred to them as an Australian band, and since they were founded in Aus, that calling them UK might be a stretch. But I guess it doesn't really matter.

The Youngs were born in Scotland, but they were raised in Australia and the band was formed and started playing (and became famous) in Australia. Since you're drafting the band, not the individuals, and the band was born in Aussie, I'd call them Australian.

There's a reason they call them the Thunder from Down Under.

With the 103rd overall pick, BF & The BFFs are proud to select, in the category of instrumental soloist, with the option of switching him into the songwriter category at a later time, arguably the greatest and most influential composer/musician of all time, the inhumanly prolific composer, the groundbreaking player, the defining artist of the Classical style, the boy-genius himself, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Quote:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was not only one of the greatest composers of the Classical period, but one of the greatest of all time. Surprisingly, he is not identified with radical formal or harmonic innovations, or with the profound kind symbolism heard in some of Bach's works. Mozart's best music has a natural flow and irresistible charm, and can express humor, joy or sorrow with both conviction and mastery. His operas, especially his later efforts, are brilliant examples of high art, as are many of his piano concertos and later symphonies. Even his lesser compositions and juvenile works feature much attractive and often masterful music.
Quote:
...More important is the influence Mozart influenced on later composers through the example of his works. Follow the surge in his reputation after his death, the study of works by Mozart became part of the training of every classical musician, and has been ever since.
Ludwig van Beethoven, whose life overlapped with Mozart's, seems to have been particularly strongly influenced by him. Beethoven became closely acquainted with Mozart's work as a teenager (he is thought to have played Mozart's operas in the court orchestra in Bonn).[65] He traveled to Vienna in 1787 in the hope (unfulfilled) of studying with Mozart. It is thought that some of Beethoven's works have direct models in comparable works by Mozart. Beethoven also wrote cadenzas (WoO 58) to Mozart's D minor piano concerto K. 466.
A number of composers have paid homage to Mozart by writing sets of variations on his themes. Beethoven wrote four such sets ((Op. 66, WoO 28, WoO 40, WoO 46. Others include Frédéric Chopin's variations for solo piano on "Là ci darem la mano" from Don Giovanni (1827) and Max Reger's Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Mozart (1914), based on the variation theme in the piano sonata K. 331.[66] Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote his Orchestral Suite No. 4 in G "Mozartiana" (1887) in tribute to Mozart.

With the 104th pick I am pleased to select Beck in the West of Mississippi category.

From allmusic.com
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p...xfoxqw5ldje~T1

Quote:
One of the most inventive and eclectic figures to emerge from the '90s alternative revolution, Beck was the epitome of postmodern chic in an era obsessed with junk culture. Drawing upon a kaleidoscope of influences — pop, folk, psychedelia, hip-hop, country, blues, R&B, funk, indie rock, noise rock, experimental rock, jazz, lounge, Brazilian music — Beck created a body of work that was wildly unpredictable, vibrantly messy, and bursting with ideas.

revised, all videos should work now...

I was toying with the idea of taking Mozart, despite not really knowing any of his stuff personally. Good pick.

Beck was on my short list for W. USA. Don't think anyone else will go for my first choice.

For our next pick, in the Songwriter category, we are proud to choose John Williams.

Quote:
John Towner Williams is an American composer, conductor and pianist. In a career that spans six decades, Williams has composed many of the most famous film scores in history, including those for Jaws, Star Wars saga, Superman, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones films, Jurassic Park, Hook, Schindler's List, and Harry Potter 1-3. In addition, he has composed theme music for four Olympic Games, NBC Nightly News, and numerous television series and concert pieces. He served as the principal conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1980 to 1993, and is now the orchestra's laureate conductor.

Williams is a five-time winner of the Academy Award. With 45 Academy Award nominations, Williams is, together with composer Alfred Newman, the second most nominated individual after Walt Disney. He was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame in 2000, and was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004.

John Williams was always one of my favourite composers to be able to play back in high school band. He was the creator of some of the greatest and most memorable scores to some of the greatest movies and truly helped bring the worlds on the silver screen to life.

And now, our pick in the Guitarist category, Tom Morello.

Quote:
Thomas Morello is a Grammy Award-winning American guitarist best known for his tenure with the bands Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, and as the acoustic artist The Nightwatchman, He was featured as one of 20 guitarists in Rolling Stone's "The Top 20 New Guitarists" article. An outspoken political activist, he was also ranked #26 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
Quote:
Morello is famed for his guitar style, which consists of heavy metal/punk hybrid riffs and hip hop-inspired sounds. His guitar playing is also characterized by heavy use of guitar effects, such as delay, modulation, wah, harmonizers, distortion, feedback, and others in unique ways and combinations. The most recognizable effect in Morello's arsenal is the Digitech Whammy, which helps him create many of his sounds. Matthew Bellamy of the English band Muse has cited Morello as an influence, which can be seen in his use of pitch-shifting in solos.

Critically acclaimed, he is said to use the guitar in a unique and imaginative way; rather than just plucking the strings, his maneuvers include toggling between two pickups - one on and one off - while rubbing his hands on the strings over the pickups (his signature vinyl scratch effect used in "Bulls on Parade"). He also uses techniques such as rapidly hitting a pencil on the strings ("Cochise", although he now emulates the sound by "baby-slapping" the strings), scraping an Allen wrench on the strings for a whole song ("People of the Sun") and even tapping or scratching his pick-ups and strings with his audio jack cable ("Bullet In The Head").

Video of the various Rage Against the Machine solos. Sorry, this video isn't very "good" as it isn't very well edited. May contain swearing, so I didn't embed it.

Tom explaining some of his tricks.

I took out the link to Wikipedia's entry for Rage Against the Machine because last time I took a look it still had a picture of the four guys naked at Lolapalooza (spelling?) making a statement.
