Ok, we're going to gauge interest and try again with this; here are the details:

First, we pick a book. We'll have one week from today for nominations, which means simply post in this thread ONE book you think would be interesting and provoke discussion.

Second, I'll ask for votes on the various nominations, and we will then pick a book which will be the subject of the meeting.

Third, I'll start yet another vote on when and where (ie - some pub or the like, not my place) the meeting will be, giving everyone enough time to read the book.

Fourth, we have the actual meeting, in which the book will be discussed with the aid of alcoholic beverages.

So, to begin - post your nominations for a book. I will refrain from making any picks myself, and will remain your faithful, neutral organizer only. You have until next Thursday night to dazzle us with your erudition!

The Road by Cormac McCarthy. After I read it, this book kept me awake for several nights just thinking about it.

See the problem with that is that I don't need to be more manly. Soooooo, yeah. I'd read a book or two there though, I'm just saying that if you want some women at the meets, they shouldn't all be about being manly.

What makes that book a list for men though really? It seems like a decent book list that just about anyone could/should read. I'm ashamed to admit to only having read a few of them.

Well, having read more than my fair share of said books, I can assure you that at least the ones I've read are rather masculine in nature. A man's perspective if you will. Written by men for men in a world where women were insignificant and held little importance. If you can't see that, I can't help you.

That doesn't mean they aren't good books, rather they have a skewed perspective. But then many many politically charged books do view things from a masculine perspective.

Not to mention there are 100 books on that list, which by my theory of math is more than ONE pick...

Last Season by Roy McGregor. Best novel about hockey ever written, telling the story of Felix Batterinsky, a Canadian-born goon of polish background, following his rise and fall through NHL ranks and his controversial stint as a coach in Finland.

As soon as I typed it I knew it may irk Firefly, written by a man, about a man, with man in the title also.

Doesn't irk me. I don't care if we read manly books... my concern was that reading 100 of them will take an eternity and for them to ALL be masculine is a bit much. I think this board needs a little more estrogen on it.

I believe "Cunning Man" is merely a term for a doctor anyways.

I would also suggest McCarthy's The Road, as it would be a good first choice to ease everybody in... It's not very long at all, I knocked it off in 2 days.

Bizarre, I just picked that up today - synchronicity at work again! I agree it looks pretty damn good.

Dude, first of all you gave a LIST of books when I asked for just one, along with no other commentary or indication if you were interested. Then you make a snarky comment which is completely uncalled for. You see where I'm going here? I'm happy if you want to participate, but this is not the kind of participation I am looking for.
