Default So I just got a DUI

So yeah, weak. Heading home from the bar with a girl, get pulled over for a head light that apparently just went out. Yeah, I'm an idiot for not noticing. Processed, fingerprinted, court date, was at least smart enough to be polite and get out the same night. Had the Ex wife pick me up. So, this was in Douglas County CO, any words of wisdom or advice? Feel free to pile on the jokes and / or smack talking, at this point I deserve it. Dammit.

Ok, so how drunk were you?

Nice of your date to completely bail ... were things looking up for the evening between you two?

And like stang said ... so you are out. With some chick or two. Get wasted. Screwing. Causing havoc all over. Get busted. Then your ex-wife comes to bail you out. ... ... ... are you sure you are not playing GTAIV?

This is why I never have more than two drinks if I have to drive home.

If I do have more than two drinks, no matter how non-tipsy I think I am... I will always arrange a pickup of some sort.

In my younger days I had way too many close calls driving home, when I know I shouldn't have been driving.

Has your license been suspended? If so, for how long?

This happened to a friend of mine recently, but different circumstances. He was arrested for DUI 12 years ago - and simply didn't turn up at court. Nothing came of it for 12 years til he was crossing the border one day and US Customs said 'Are you aware there's a warrant for your arrest?'

All those years he had renewed his licence, held insurance, etc...he assumed it just disappeared. Having to travel to the US for business, he turned himself in and lost his licence for a year - a mandatory penalty in Ontario.

Anyways, he was extremely dependent on his car and thought life would end without it. But he got through. Cost him a small fortune in cabs, hired a driver to get him to and from work, etc. He made it through the year. Moral of the story is, it may seem like it's impossible to get by without it but you'll find a way. In his case he'll never touch a drop of alcohol and then drive again so I guess the penalty was a good deterrent.

Be thankful that you or someone else wasn't injured or killed, and don't do it again.

Better yet, attend a local MADD memorial and watch family members break down over a loved one they lost because someone else drove drunk.

You should be getting down on your knees and thanking your lucky stars you didn't kill someone else.

You, nobody should really give 2 sh-ts about. You are dumb enough to be drunk and behind the wheel, and we would be better off without you. I mean you obviously have enough of a brain to use a keyboard, and yet somehow in this day and age, you still figured it was "ok" to be drunk driving.

I lost someone to a drunk driver who was "ok to drive".

You got lucky. You got a DUI. Not manslaughter, or the burden of living every day knowing you murdered someone because you were stupid. Moving ahead? A good idea might be not not drink and drive anymore. Maybe this instance will teach you that lesson. I tend to think a few years without a license will drive it home.

People make mistakes. It's true. I understand that. But drinking and driving kills people. This isn't like getting fired for dropping the F-bomb at work. Or breaking up with a girl because you cheated.

This is death.

Take it to heart. You did the crime, now deal with it like a man, take the punishment, and use it to remind yourself how f-ing lucky you are.

I've had two DUI's.. the first one I was 17 and blew over the limit. The Cop told me if he gave me a 08 he would be stuck behind the desk for 3 days doing paper work. He then asked if I was within walking distance of my house, I said yes, he said here is a 04, 30 day suspension, don't do it again.

The second time I was WASTED on campus after a big Commerce BBQ, the campus renta cops had a barricade all set up, pulled me over, cop said damn near the samething. "luck you stayed out so late, I'm over the amount of 08's I want to hand out tonight, 24 hour suspension, don't do it again."

I was young, dumb, and wreckless. I haven't driven even after ONE beer since. I look back now and it is a wonder I didn't get any worse, or hurt anyone. Stupid, stupid mistake. Driving drunk just does not pay, avoid it at all costs kids!

Before the piling on gets too harsh, I would point out that the legal limit for driving, and the impairment limit for most adult males are not the same thing. It's completely possible to be just over the limit and feel less impairment than you would if you were just tired from getting off work. The legal limit is based on the precautionary principle because many people cannot tell when they impaired.

There's no excuse for it, but being blowing over does not always mean "drunk".

A police officer pulls over this guy who’s been weaving in and out of the lanes. He goes up to the guy’s window and says, “Sir, I need you to blow into this breathalyzer tube.” The man says, “Sorry, officer, I can’t do that. I am an asthmatic. If I do that, I’ll have a really bad asthma attack.” “Okay, fine. I need you to come down to the station to give a blood sample.” “I can’t do that either. I am a hemophiliac. If I do that, I’ll bleed to death.” “Well, then, we need a urine sample.” “I’m sorry, officer, I can’t do that either. I am also a diabetic. If I do that, I’ll get really low blood sugar.” “All right, then I need you to come out here and walk this white line.” “I can’t do that, officer.” “Why not?” “Because I’m drunk.”

Seriously: at least the story ended happily with no one dying or being injured...
