Default Have you evercome close to winning a Darwin Award?

I have. I keep a reef tank and something went wrong with my protein skimmer pump. I turned of the power bar I thought it was plugged into but alas it was plugged into the other one. Was a very "revolting" experience to say the least. Anyone else come close or know of someone who did?

When I was about 12 I thought that it would be a god idea to jump off a deep freeze with a skipping rope around my neck (more around my jaw, and not too tight..but I digress). It was one of the kind of rubbery ones so my theory is that it would have broken (I cannot recall why I wanted to snap the rope...I'm sure that there was a logical reason!). Anyway, had one of my friends not talked me out of that ridiculously stupid idea I probably wouldn't be here to explain it today!

I ate a burger off the ground in a Mexican bar once, I was so hungry / wasted. By rights, I shouldn't even be here.

I decided to do the electrical wiring in my basement with a buddy and a bunch of beer. There are about four different occasions which probably should have done me in.

Whilst renovating my house, I had to remove the staircase leading to the basement in order to enlarge the kitchen. I had a large dumpster located in the backyard just below a window in the kitchen at the top of the landing.

Just as I finished tearing out the fir-monstrosity, my girlfriend at the time arrived unexpectedly to... Ahem. Anyway immediately after the business I grabbed an armload of refuse and strode to the window to dispose of the garbage... Only to step out into mid-air! I unwittingly twisted around in the air and landed on my back, wrestler style in the basement about 9 feet down.

Luckily, I had finished jack-hammering out the old concrete slab a week or two before and landed in just plain old clay soil, which was the only reason I was unhurt, except for a bit of sore shoulder.

Moral of the story:Mark off all fall-hazards on your work-site.

When I was around 12 I was walking back to our car with my parents in a parking garage in Atlanta. I thought we were parked just on the other side of about a 3 foot tall cement wall, so I ran over towards it, intending to vault over it. As I got a few feet away I realized that there was about a 50-foot wide gap in the parking garage, with at least a 7-story fall instead. Fortunately I stopped myself before hopping the wall, but its been a key factor in my fear of heights ever since. My parents would never have known why I did such a thing.

I decided I was going to jump a road in my Grand-Am...I rolled it and totalled off the car. The roof was crushed right down to the seat, the front bumper was ripped off, and 2 of the tires broke right off the axle. Yes I was going fast, and yes I was a complete dumbass.
